Modernisation of Mangaluru fishing harbour will be over by May, 2027, Karnataka tells Union government

The Karnataka government has reported to the Union government that modernisation and upgradation of the Mangaluru fishing harbour project has achieved a physical progress of 25%.The State government has reported that the pending components of the project are scheduled to be completed by May 21, 2027.Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the Union government approved a proposal of the Karnataka government for modernisation and upgradation of the harbour at a cost of ₹37.47 crore in 2024 with the Central share of ₹22.48 crore under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). In that, the State government has spent ₹6.31 crore.The project was envisaged to facilitate berthing facilities for 1,600 fishing vessels and to benefit about 18,000 fishers and associated stakeholders in the fisheries sector, the Minister said.He replied to an unstarred question by member from Dakshina Kannada Capt. Brijesh Chowta.The Minister said that the Union Department of Fisheries has released ₹126.01 crore for fisheries development projects in Karnataka from 2023-24 to 2026-27. This also includes the Mangaluru project.Under PMMSY, the Union government approved various fisheries development projects in Karnataka at a total cost of ₹1,053.60 crore from 2020-21 to 2026-2027, which are at various stages of implementation.Under PMMSY, the selection of beneficiaries is done by the respective State government. Accordingly, the Karnataka government reported that 212 beneficiaries in the three coastal districts (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada) were covered under beneficiary-oriented activities, including deep-sea fishing vessels, ice plants, cold storages, refrigerated vehicles, insulated vehicles, three-wheelers with ice boxes, and motorcycles with ice boxes.The Union Department of Fisheries has taken several measures under PMMSY to address infrastructure and operational requirements of the fisheries sector, including development and modernization of fishing harbours and fish landing centres, cold chain infrastructure, hygienic fish handling facilities, fish transport and marketing infrastructure and quality fish seed production.The other measures include access to institutional credit through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) and Kisan Credit Card (KCC), strengthening of aquatic animal health and biosecurity measures, promotion of insurance coverage, and capacity building of fishers, he said.
