Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced it was laying off three percent of its workforce and shuttering BioWare, the pioneering video game studio known for its role-playing games. At the time of its closure, BioWare was in early development on a new RPG set in the Mass Effect universe. That game will now never see the light of day (save for a leaked trailer, which Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier confirmed to be real), but this might not be the end for the Mass Effect universe. Prime Video’s long-in-the-works Mass Effect TV series is reportedly still in development. According to IGN, which cites anonymous sources close to the production, “all the creatives who were attached to the TV project remain onboard.” Those include showrunner Doug Jung (The Cloverfield Paradox, Star Trek Beyond) and writer Dan Casey (F9). The TV series is an original story set after the events of the original Mass Effect game trilogy. The last update about it came in April 2026, and it was admittedly pretty grim: according to the Ankler, Peter Friedlander, Amazon’s head of global TV, reportedly asked for the scripts to be rewritten to be “more appealing to non-gamers.” Casey, however, disputed that claim, writing on Bluesky, “I don’t know where that ‘non-gaming audiences’ quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me.” At the time, the Ankler also reported that Mass Effect hadn’t yet received a series order. IGN’s story didn’t specify whether that was still the case or how far along the show is in the development process. If the Mass Effect TV show does end up happening, it’ll have a lot more riding on it than it did previously. This could be the final entry in the Mass Effect canon. Let’s hope it doesn’t suck.
