Marvel Reneges Wonder Man’s Season 2 Renewal, Cancels Emmy-Nominated Show

In a move that truly makes you wonder, Marvel and Disney+ have abruptly canceled Season 2 of Wonder Man, despite issuing a renewal back in March. Variety reports that the writers’ room for Season 2 never formally convened, and the writers have now been released to seek other projects. However, sources tell the trade that the characters may still appear in future Marvel projects. Premiering in January, the series’ first season follows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II‘s Simon Williams as he purses a life-changing film role with the “aid” of his new friend, Sir Ben Kingsley‘s Trevor Slattery. The co-leads were praised for their dynamic, and Abdul-Mateen is up for a Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy. Consequence even named Wonder Man our No. 1 TV show of the year so far. Disney+ did not reveal official viewership data, but the show did hit No. 8 on the Neilsen streaming originals charts the week of its release, although it fell out of the top 10 thereafter. Still, the cancelation comes as a surprise. With general critical acclaim, Abdul-Mateen’s Emmy nom, and co-creator and two-episode-director Destin Daniel Cretton on the verge of a massive hit with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, reneging on a Wonder Man Season 2 at this point seems odd. It’s fair to ponder, then, if there are actually bigger plans for Abdul-Mateen as Wonder Man, perhaps in Avengers: Secret Wars, or a rebranding of Wonder Man Season 2 as West Coast Avengers.
