Marvel just unveiled some of the greatest Thor art of all time. One of Marvel’s oldest and most recognizable characters, Thor has fought injustice all over the multiverse. In addition to being one of the pillars of the Marvel Universe, Thor also played a major role in the early years of the MCU. Created by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber and Jack Kirby, Thor debuted during the Silver Age of Comics, as well as at the dawn of the modern Marvel Universe. Since his arrival in Journey Into Mystery #83, a number of top-notch creators have taken turns chronicling Thor’s adventures. In addition to his creators, artists and writers such as Walt Simonson, Jason Aaron and Dan Jurgens have put their spins on the Odinson, adding to the character’s lore. The times these creators put in on Thor are regarded as highlights in the character’s history. Thor continues to be a foundational hero in the Marvel Universe, even after being sidelined for a few years in the 2000s. Thor has been involved with many incarnations of the Avengers, and will continue to make appearances in the MCU. Stan, Larry and Jack caught a storm in a bottle with Thor, one that pushed creators to their best. Now, Marvel has unleashed a unique and awe-inspiring take on the God of Thunder. Thor Goes Into the Fine Art Realm For His Next Cover Marvel revealed its latest crop of October’s “Stormbreaker” variant covers to AIPT. Marvel’s Stormbreakers program highlights some of the publisher’s best artists, be they established or up and coming. Each month, the Stormbreakers are challenged to come up with a new cover, usually riffing on a theme. For the month of October, the Stormbreakers’ theme is “Art Style,” meaning the covers will take cues from various schools of art, such as Expressionism. Marvel also provided AIPT with the actual covers, including Alessandro Cappuccio’s for Thor #802. According to AIPT, Cappuccio’s cover is inspired by “crosshatching and etching.” The amazing cover features Thor wielding Mjölnir, which is crackling with energy. Behind him whirls a maelstrom, but Thor appears unfazed, instead focused on whatever threat is in front of him. The issue will be written by Al Ewing and drawn by Pasqual Ferry. Marvel has many such heroes in their stable of characters: Daredevil has carried creators from Frank Miller to Stephanie Phillps to career-best work, as has Captain America and Iron Man. It is only fitting then, that Thor attracts top-flight writers and artists as well. The aforementioned Walt Simonson is the first that immediately springs to fan’s minds when definitive Thor runs are being discussed. Taking cues from the “fine arts,” Cappuccio has given fans one of the best pieces of Thor art in recent memory, perfectly capturing the character’s energy and intensity. And Alessandro Cappuccio makes a convincing case to take over the Odinson’s adventures one day with the cover for Thor #802. Cappuccio, who has illustrated Moon Knight’s adventures for the last several years, has what it takes to perfectly bring Thor to life. Taking cues from the “fine arts,” Cappuccio has given fans one of the best pieces of Thor art in recent memory, perfectly capturing the character’s energy and intensity. While it may be tempting to write the “Art Style” theme off as a gimmick, the fact is it has inspired some great covers, such as Cappuccio's epic look at Thor.
