Man is charged with manslaughter after 'bingo-loving' pensioner, 75, died in a burglary at home in London

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 20:44 EDT, 24 August 2026 | Updated: 20:56 EDT, 24 August 2026 A man has been charged with manslaughter after a pensioner died following a reported house burglary.Jeffrey Rose, 45, was arrested on Friday - ten days after police were called to Finsbury Park, north London, at 9.20pm on August 21.Responding to reports of a house burglary in Tollington Park, they found 'wonderful, bingo-loving' Rose Smith, 75, in need of help.She was taken to hospital, where she sadly died the following day.An 81–year–old man was also taken to hospital with injuries but was later discharged.Rose, of Apsley Close, North Harrow, will appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday on charges of manslaughter and aggravated burglary with intent.Ms Smith's death was described by her family as the 'most devastating loss [they] could imagine'.They added: 'Rose was a truly wonderful, outgoing woman who was loved by so many people. Rose Smith, 75, was taken to hospital after reports of a burglary at a house in Finsbury Park'She loved bingo, going to cafés with her friends and, above all, spending time with her family. 'She treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great–grandchild.'She was the life and soul of every party. She had a wonderful personality, a big heart and a way of bringing laughter and happiness wherever she went. 'We want people to remember Rose for the person she truly was - loving, fun, kind, sociable and full of life.'Detective Chief Inspector Ben Massink, leading the investigation, said on Monday: 'Our thoughts remain with Rose’s family and friends, they continue to be supported by specialist officers during this difficult time and have been informed of this update in our investigation.'While we have made an arrest, I know this incident has caused significant concern in the local community. An increased police presence has remained in Tollington Park and I am grateful to those who supported our appeal for more information.'We thank those who have already come forward to provide witness accounts and continue to appeal for anyone with information or doorbell footage to come forward. No detail is too small.'
