The Italian is familiar with the club, having worked as Guardiola’s assistant manager there on two different spells. Maresca has already added to the City squad with the big-money arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116million. The club has also added teenage trio Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, Jeremy Monga from Leicester City and Mathys Detourbet from Troyes. Guardiola was expected to take some time out of football before returning to coaching. However, reports emerged during the World Cup that he had verbally agreed to take charge of England before Thomas Tuchel was hired. He would have become the replacement for Sir Gareth Southgate but had a change of heart. He has now been in talks with the Italians over taking over their national team. Comment now
