LTO summons driver, owner of vehicle in fatal Laguna hit-and-run

MANILA, Philippines — The driver and registered owner of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident in Laguna were issued a show cause order (SCO) by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), the agency said on Wednesday. The LTO said that a male pedestrian was trying to cross the street when he was suddenly hit by a utility vehicle, which eventually fled the scene last July 7 along National Highway in Barangay Maikling, Calamba, Laguna. The victim was later brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Article continues after this advertisement READ: LTO impounds 2 buses supposedly linked to Chavit Singson After LTO identified the driver and registered driver of the vehicle, it ordered them to appear in a hearing on July 28, Tuesday and submit beforehand a verified sworn comment or explanation on why they should not be held liable for reckless driving, duty of driver in case of accident, and why the driver’s license should not be suspended or revoked for being an improper driver to operate a motor vehicle. The license of the driver involved in the incident was ordered surrendered, and he was placed under a 90-day preventive suspension while the investigation is ongoing. The vehicle was also under alarm status. “Failure on your part to attend/submit your Comment/Explanation shall be construed as a waiver of your right to be heard and the Office shall proceed and complete the investigation in your absence. You may opt to be assisted by counsel during the investigation,” a portion of the SCO read. I will make sure that the driver involved in this incident faces consequences, as well as others who are proven to have violated traffic laws.
