Ramannavar has said that every person above the age of 18 years had the opportunity to pledge for eye donation, body donation and skin donation and live through others even after their death.Speaking at the body donation event of former Syndicate Bank manager Parappa V. Hugar in Dharwad on Friday, Dr. Ramannavar said that while eye donation helped in giving eyesight to two persons, skin donation facilitated early recovery of patients suffering from severe burns caused by industrial mishaps and acid attacks. He said that the concept of body donation was not a new one but still many hesitated to donate their bodies after death because of various misconceptions and also due to some religious beliefs.“For a medical student, cadaver is the first teacher. However, across the country medical institutions are facing dearth of cadavers to teach their students. As per MCI guidelines for every batch of 25 medical students there should be a cadaver to teach. It will suffice to say that people donating their bodies will be of help to others even after their deaths,” he said.Explaining what will happen to the dead bodies donated to hospital, Dr. Ramannavar explained the procedure and said that both burial and cremation would take place after cadavers were dissected to teach the students.Thanking the Hugar family, Dr. Ramannavar said that in the absence of body donation pledge by the deceased, families could donate the bodies of their dear ones, if they informed the nearest hospitals about their intention within six hours of the death. He also emphasised that death certificate was essential to complete the body donation formalities. The family members Premavati P. Hugar, Praveen, Pramod and Pratibha symbolically handed over documents to complete the body donation process after few final rituals. Former drug inspector Shivanand Huvin, former president of Dharwad District Union of Working Journalist Lochanesh Hugar and others were present. Published - July 25, 2026 12:31 pm IST
