The George Boughey-trained four-year-old gelding is as short as 1-66 to win a three-runner race over six furlongs at the Surrey track. Superstar jockey Billy Loughnane – who won the 2,000 Guineas with Boughey’s Bow Echo earlier this season – will do the steering in the 7.40pm contest. Asuka was gelded after winning on debut at Newmarket’s July Course in August 2024 and went down just a nose after a 697-day break at Wolverhampton earlier this month. He drops back in trip today and the bookies think he is as close to a good thing as you can get, despite conceding 12lb to his two rivals. The horse, who runs in the colours of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, has been called ‘impossible to oppose’ in the pre-race comments while Sun Racing’s Templegate said: “Finished well at Wolverhampton and this looks an open goal.” Asuka takes on two horses who have never finished better than last. Yazoo is second-fav at 14-1 but, in somewhat of a rarity for a Flat race, unseated his jockey when sent off 50-1 on his last run at Kempton earlier this month. Prior to that the three-year-old finished last at Yarmouth in June at odds of 16-1. The three-year-old gelding has raced just once, finishing tenth of ten at 66-1 in a Wolverhampton maiden eight days ago. A word of warning if you’re thinking of adding Asuka to any betslips, though. It wasn’t that long ago that Tom Marquand made history when riding the shortest-priced loser in British history. The aptly-named Doom was turned over at 1-25 in a two-horse race at Ripon in 2023. Boughey is in top form, though, so it should simply be a case of Asuka adding his name to an illustrious list. The mighty Frankel justified short odds of 1-20 at Goodwood in 2012. In 2023, Whatawit won at Ffos Las at 1-100 and in 2022 Positive Impact did the business at Brighton at 1-66.
