It's not greenlit yet, but at least Aaron Pierre's John Stewart will return in Man of Tomorrow Photo: John Johnson/HBO Max Sign in to your Polygon.com account Lanterns season 1 finished airing earlier this month, meaning Sunday nights are now fully free for NFL football, I guess. The season 1 finale wrapped up the show's plot well, while still leaving viewers with some burning questions. (And a burning desire to see Millennial-favorite John Stewart actually be a Green Lantern!) Fans may want a second season, but DC Studios has yet to confirm it. In a new interview, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran shared why. IGN asked Safran about Lanterns as part of an interview promoting Clayface, which releases next week. "Listen, we'll see what happens with Lanterns season 2," he said. "If, I think, the collective group of HBO and DC and [executive producer] Chris Mundy and the team all feel like we've got something that is a worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television, then I wouldn't be surprised to see more." When asked if Lanterns season 2 has been greenlit, Safran answered bluntly: "No." John Stewart isn't going away Image: HBO Lanterns season 1 concluded with John Stewart choosing to be an independent Green Lantern protecting Earth without working for the Guardians of the Universe. Fans will get to see him go full superhero in next year's Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. Safran explained why Stewart debuted on TV instead of a movie. "The episodic world is always going to be a really important part of our overall slate. It's a great way to tell stories that need more real estate than a feature film can offer you, and it's a great way to introduce characters that we then bring into the feature world," he said. Next up on TV for the DC Universe is 2027's The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a true crime-style docuseries starring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. DC Studios hasn't decided which project comes after that. "There are a couple that are vying for that spot, but we haven't firmly committed to what the next one will be in either film or television. We have a pretty robust slate of animation that's all going forward right now but, on the live-action side, it's a little bit TBD," Safran said. Safran also revealed the leads for the upcoming Mister Miracle show, and that Scott Snyder is currently writing scripts for an Absolute Batman animated series. On the film side, he noted that James Gunn hasn't chosen what project he'll direct next.
