Sign in to your ScreenRant account Sci-fi fans are in for a real treat this February 2027, as a $160 million sci-fi mega-franchise is set to hit theaters across North America. The release is sure to give longtime fans plenty to celebrate while potentially sparking a new hyperfixation for newcomers eager to explore a world where humanity takes warfare into space, wielding enormous humanoid machines as weapons. Bandai Namco Filmworks, with animation by SUNRISE, is finally continuing the broader Gundam SEED storyline with the upcoming Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO movie, a prequel to 2024’s Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. While an exact release date for the movie has yet to be announced in North America, we do know that fans can expect it to hit theaters in February 2027, following its January 15, 2027, release in Japan. Continuity-wise, Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will fill in the story between Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM, bringing back familiar characters while centering on Shinn Asuka. The story will specifically revolve around how the theft of the Strike Freedom triggers conflict amid a fragile peace hard-won following a previous war. Essentially, this movie will further explore the events and character relationships that lead into the 2024 film. Everything You Need To Know About SEED FREEDOM ZERO Coming To North American Theaters In February 2027 The February 2027 release window for North American audiences was announced at this year's New York Comic Con in October. Additionally, the English voice cast was revealed, with Matthew Erickson voicing Shinn Asuka, Matt Hill voicing Kira Yamato, and Sam Vincent voicing Athrun Zala. While fans can choose to begin their Gundam adventure with this movie, we recommend catching up on several installments beforehand for the best viewing experience. While watching the entire Gundam franchise would certainly give you plenty of superfan knowledge ahead of the prequel, there are three entries in particular that are most relevant to understanding the characters and events in Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002), Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY (2004), and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (2024). By watching these three installments, you'll walk away with a better understanding of who Kira, Athrun, and Shinn are, as well as the differences between Naturals and Coordinators. You'll also gain a clearer picture of the conflict that shapes the franchise and the political and personal struggles leading into the new movie. While Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM technically takes place after FREEDOM ZERO chronologically, fans may still prefer to watch it first, as doing so will likely give them a greater appreciation for the gaps the prequel is intended to fill. To avoid confusion, it's important to note that Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is completely separate from the upcoming live-action Gundam movie starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, which is also expected to arrive in 2027. That film has yet to announce an official release date beyond its 2027 window, but understandably, newcomers to the franchise may be confused by the fact that two major Gundam movies are expected to arrive in the same year.
