KDE Plasma is getting its own "safe mode," and it'll start appearing sometime in Q4

Published Oct 11, 2026, 2:39 AM EDT Simon is a Computer Science BSc graduate who has been writing about technology since 2014, and using Windows machines since 3.1. After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech. Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics. Work has begun, and parts should land in Q4 2026, per KDE Digital Sovereignty updates. It's no secret that I love KDE; it's a major reason I stuck with Linux over Windows, after all. However, there are some elements from Windows that I do miss, such as a special "safe mode" for diagnosing issues. Well, it seems that the KDE community is making their own version of Windows' troubleshooting mode, and we should start seeing the pieces fall into place during Q4 2026. KDE Plasma is getting its own "safe mode" to help diagnose your problems It'll even guide you through the process of finding the culprit Over on KDE Blogs, the community has published a new blog post titled "This Quarter in KDE Digital Sovereignty: Q3 2026." It's an excellent read if you're interested in KDE, because it's where the community discusses what it's doing with all the money they're getting from Germany's Sovereign Tech Agency, including the €1,285,200 they got in May. There are some interesting additions mentioned, such as stronger security and better network-sharing tech. However, the one that specifically caught my eye was this: Work began on adding a “safe mode” to Plasma, wherein you’ll be able to log into a dedicated troubleshooting environment that offers tools to help you get back to a working session. This work is all in progress, with parts expected to start landing in Q4. If you click that link in the quote, you'll see the KDE Invent page for this new "safe mode." It'll allow users to boot into KDE Plasma without any third-party customizations, and will even "[aid] the user in discovering which one(s) is/are causing problems specifically." Not much is explained about that last part, but I'd like to imagine some sort of tool or guide that automatically spots anything that's hampering your system, which would be really nice if true.
