K-drama Exclusive: Ji Chang-wook says there's 'no comfortable genre for me'

South Korean actor Ji Chang-wook may have built a reputation for moving effortlessly between romance, action, thriller, and historical dramas, but he says he still hasn’t found a genre that feels completely comfortable.In an exclusive conversation with India Today, while discussing his upcoming Netflix series The Scandal, Ji Chang-wook opened up about the challenges of taking on different kinds of roles. Despite his extensive filmography, the actor said every new project is still a process of figuring things out.“Is there really a genre that feels comfortable?” Ji Chang-wook told India Today, adding. “Honestly, I still find myself struggling and finding my way through each project.” The actor added that even senior performers he looks up to continue to face similar challenges. “As I’ve continued working, I’ve noticed that even the senior actors I look up to also seem to find things very difficult every time they take on a new project,” he said. For Ji Chang-wook, that realisation has also taken away some of the pressure to have everything figured out. “If that’s the case, I sometimes think, ‘Then there’s really no reason for me to feel like I should have it all figured out.’ So, no, I don’t think there’s a genre that I’m completely comfortable with yet,” he said.The actor’s comments come at a time when The Scandal sees him step into another period setting, with the series drawing on elements of traditional Korean storytelling. Ji Chang-wook also spoke about the use of pansori in the drama, noting that the story begins and ends with the traditional Korean musical storytelling form. He drew a comparison with Indian cinema, where music often plays an integral role in storytelling and helps establish an emotional connection with audiences. “Our work actually begins with pansori. The story begins with pansori, in a way, and it also closes with pansori,” he said. “In some ways, it’s similar to the kind of music you hear in Indian cinema.”In The Scandal, Ji Chang-wook is seen alongside Son Ye-jin and Nana.
