Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi sworn in as Bombay High Court Chief Justice

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma felicitates Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi after the latter took oath as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court at a brief oath-taking ceremony held at the Lok Bhavan, Mumbai, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026). Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath of office.Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar were also present at the ceremony, along with a few Cabinet Ministers.State Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal read out the notification and Warrant of Appointment of the Chief Justice issued by the President of India. The swearing-in ceremony began with the National Song, followed by the National Anthem, and State song by the police band. The ceremony concluded with the rendition of National Song and the National Anthem.Justice Tripathi succeeds Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, who was elevated to the Supreme Court. Justice Ravindra Ghuge was holding the additional charge of the Bombay High Court.Justice Tripathi graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1990 and began practising as a civil advocate on January 11, 1992. He served as the Additional Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh starting in October 2007, before being appointed as an Additional Judge on September 27, 2013, and later as a Permanent Judge on April 10, 2015.Justice Tripathi is due to retire on June 20, 2028.
