JRPG Fans Will Be Eating Extremely Well in 2027

Published Oct 15, 2026, 11:00 AM EDT Big year for weebs Image: Square Enix When it rains, it pours. With the exception of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, 2026 has been a relatively quiet year for Japanese role-playing games. That's all set to change starting in January 2027. Next year will see fresh releases from some of the genre's biggest franchises, like Final Fantasy, Persona, and Kingdom Hearts. There are also some JRPG-adjacent games to look forward to, like the latest from Yakuza creator Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios. While some of those anticipated titles already have firm launch dates, there are a few more with a more generic 2027 release window that will likely make their debut in the second half of the calendar. Here's a few of the biggest JRPGs we can't wait to play in 2027. 1 Stranger Than Heaven Release date: Jan. 15, 2027 Technically speaking, RGG's sweeping fifty-year epic is an action-adventure game, but there's plenty of overlap here for fans of role-playing games to enjoy. While the combat in Stranger Than Heaven promises to be more intricate and challenging than the button-mashing fare of Yakuza or the turn-based Like a Dragon, players can also expect meaty storytelling, tons of optional exploration, and a bunch of side-quests to delve into. Also, both Tupac and Snoop Dogg appear in this game. Don't you want to know what they're up to? 2 Persona 4 Revival Release date: Feb. 18, 2027 Atlus's Persona series is often associated with slick urban settings, but P4 marks a bit of a swerve for the series, setting the action in the sleepy rural town of Inaba. As usual, you'll step into the shoes of a new transfer student at the local high school, balancing making new friends and maintaining good grades by day while investigating supernatural phenomena by night. The story revolves around the Midnight Channel, a television station that shares creepy videos on rainy nights that seem to be connected to an ongoing serial murder case. With roller-coaster plot twists, banging tunes, and an endearing ensemble cast, this already great game is about to get a serious glow-up. 3 Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Release date: April 8, 2027 Just in time for the original PS1 game's 30th anniversary year, Square Enix brings its wildly ambitious Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy to a close with Revelation. We've already gotten a look at the open-world gameplay made possible by the new addition of the Highwind airship, as well as a glimpse of the opening sequence that teases Cloud's incoming realization about what really happened in Nibelheim five years earlier. Both Remake and Rebirth added some fascinating new twists to this iconic story — along with an absolute ton of minigames and optional content — and we eagerly anticipate more of the same here. 4 Kingdom Hearts 4 Release date: TBD 2027 After eight long years, Sora is finally coming back. Given the focus on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at Summer Game Fest, we weren't necessarily expecting to hear about Kingdom Hearts 4 for a while. B the June Nintendo Direct surprised us all with the first in-depth look at the sequel since 2022. The fun kept coming in August, when Square Enix showed off another new trailer for the game at Disney's bi-annual conference D23. That trailer revealed that Pixar's Coco will serve as the inspiration for one of KH4's worlds, and also featured gameplay for Goofy, Mickey, and Donald. We expect to hear more about this one next summer, once the Revelation launch is in the rearview. Though the trailer was light on gameplay, it reveals some key lore. An elite academy trains young warriors to wield a powerful force called Anima. They use special weapons to intensify that power, but those weapons can also record their thoughts. (I'm sure there's nothing sinister at work here!) Like previous Xenoblade games, the landscapes are stunning and expansive, and the character designs are beautiful. Nintendo doesn't tend to announce its first- or second-party games many years in advance, so we're expecting to hear more about Xenoblade Genesis in a winter or spring Direct. 6 Persona 6 Release date: TBD 2027 It's been an entire decade since Persona 5 was first released in Japan, and while we've all enjoyed the various adventures of the Phantom Thieves thoroughly, fans of the series have been very ready to move on for quite some time now. We finally got our very first official glimpse at Persona 6 during the Xbox Games Showcase back in June — and when I say "glimpse," I mean it. The brief trailer opens on a rainy graveyard crowded with headstones, intercut with white noise, rumbling thunder, and faint mechanical droning. The camera pans up to a headless statue of a human figure, and we see the silhouette of a hand reaching toward it. Then, we see a rapid-fire series of collage images: facial features cut out of magazines, pointing fingers, and what appears to be brain synapses firing. It was an infuriatingly stingy tease in the moment, but at least it's a sign of life. We'll undoubtedly see more of this one once Persona 4 Revival is out in the wild.
