IIM-B students have created 1.8 million jobs, funded 1,200 start-ups, says alumni association

Former students of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) claimed to have evolved into one of India’s most influential ecosystems for entrepreneurship, investment, and social transformation, with its 30,000 members across India and overseas contributing significantly to economic growth, innovation, social change and employment generation.According to data shared by IIMBAA (IIM Bangalore Alumni Association) with The Hindu, IIM-B alumni-founded enterprises and investment networks have collectively created well over 1.8 million direct and indirect jobs across sectors ranging from logistics and retail to education, agri-tech and venture capital.Alumni-led startups such as BigBasket, Delhivery, Infra.Market, Licious, NestAway, and Urban Ladder have not only transformed consumer markets but have also generated employment at scale, particularly through logistics and gig-economy platforms.IIMBAA President Harish Mittal said, beyond entrepreneurship, alumni have played a pivotal role in nurturing India’s startup ecosystem through venture capital and private equity.Collectively, alumni-led investment firms manage or advise assets estimated at $15-20 billion, funding more than 1,200 high-growth enterprises and supporting an estimated 500,000 direct jobs across portfolio companies. Investment platforms such as 360 ONE (formerly IIFL Wealth), Florintree Advisors, Peak XV, Matrix Partners, Bloom Ventures, Athera Ventures, and 3P Investment Managers have backed several of India’s emerging businesses, as per Mr. Mittal.Beyond businessIn education, alumni-led organisations, including TeamLease, CL Educate, WhiteHat Jr., Sportz Village, iPRIMED, Step Up for India, and Turning Pages have reached over 50 million learners, while in the social sector, organisations such as Sattva Consulting, Saahas Zero Waste, Central Square Foundation, Unnati Foundation, and Goodera have strengthened over 1,000 NGOs and gram panchayats, mobilising more than ₹2,000 crore in philanthropic and impact funding, and touching an estimated 10 million lives.Agri-tech ventures, including GPS Renewables, Taraltec and KrashakVed, alongside contributions from alumni serving in public administration, have improved agricultural value chains, and integrated more than 150,000 farmers and gig workers into modern markets, IIMBAA claimed.IIMBAA is organising a two-day Global Leadership Conclave, IIMBue-2026, on August 1 and 2 at The Leela Bhartiya City, Bengaluru. Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Omar Abdullah will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session while on the second day Noel Naval Tata, Chairperson, Tata Trusts will deliver a special address.Sandeep Kumar, Chief Executive, L&T Semiconductor Technologies, Siddharth Sharma, CEO, Tata Trusts, Manish Tiwary, CMD, Nestle India, Prabha Narashimhan, MD and CEO Colgate-Palmolive India, P.R. Seshadri, MD and CEO, South Indian Bank, G.V Prasad, Co-Chairman and MD, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, are expected to be participate in the conclave, whose theme is ‘Changing the Orbit’.Mr. Mittal said that IIMBue has, over the years, evolved into a platform that encourages thought leadership across business, geopolitics, technology, sports and the social sector, with discussions often translating into new ventures and long-term collaborations.
