HyprBSD Provides Wayland-Based Desktop Built Atop FreeBSD, Complete With Steam Gaming

While FreeBSD has been working to improve its desktop and laptop experience, that work isn't yet shipping in released form for the OS installer and other ongoing efforts. Now there's a new desktop FreeBSD distribution on the scene with HyprBSD providing a Wayland-based desktop experience and with the Linux binary compatibility layer even an easy route to gaming with Steam. After being frustrated by the out-of-the-box FreeBSD desktop experience especially around the NVIDIA graphics drivers, IT consultant and 25+ year FreeBSD admin Sam Sheridan took to creating HyprBSD for a nice out-of-the-box experience. There have been other efforts over the years for a nice FreeBSD desktop experience with the likes of PC-BSD / TrueOS or helloSystem or the still ongoing GhostBSD. HyprBSD is currently based on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE and ships with a graphical installer that can get a system up and running in about three minutes. AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics are supported. For the Wayland-based desktop experience they are using the Hyprland compositor. HyprBSD gets Steam running via FreeBSD's Linux compatibility layer and has been verified to work with a variety of games, including BattlEye-protected games. XWayland is working too for X11 dependent software. Many of these modifications can be done to a stock FreeBSD installation but the intent here is on a smoother and more polished out-of-the-box user experience. Various fixes to FreeBSD have also been made as part of this new initiative for further enhancing FreeBSD on the desktop. Those curious about this new BSD desktop option can learn more about it via HyprBSD.org. Currently the operating system is treated in release candidate form.
