While your clients in Dressmaker are more than willing to pay for the dresses they commission from you, sometimes your vision might be a bit more than they can afford. So, if you need to make some extra funds, then it might be time to look into selling off-the-rack gowns. Of course, materials don't come free, so figuring out the right combination to save you time and increase profit isn't easy. That said, there are a few things you can do to make some quick cash, which you can then turn around and use for commissions or your own stunning creations. How To Make Money Selling Off-The-Rack Dresses Selling off-the-rack dresses unlocks relatively quickly after you begin the game. After completing your first few commissions, you'll have a new tab added to the sketchbook that lets you design a new dress without any specific requirements. Obviously, if your goal is to make money quickly, you won't want to do anything too elaborate. So, when picking the design, you want to select the simplest options you can: the strapless bodice and the pencil skirt. Since it's strapless, you won't need to worry about a collar or sleeves. From there, draft the design and select any measurements. I typically load one of my clients' measurements to save time. Then it's time to select the materials for your design, which is where you can increase the profit you'll make off the dress. Regardless of what you choose, you'll never see a loss from any dress you make. This is because the game automatically factors material cost when calculating the sale price, along with percentages for your quality and prestige. That said, we're obviously still looking to maximize time here, so for the fabric, you'll want to pick burlap. It's actually the only free material, so if you're completely out of money, then it's always a good option. In this case, however, it's not enough to just make dresses out of burlap. Since it's free, the profit you'll see is small, and it will take ages to build up a nice chunk of change this way. So, to speed things along, you'll need to add some accessories. Specifically, you'll want to add the most expensive accessory you have. Brilliant Diamonds are one of the most expensive accessories you'll have access to early on, but if you have a pricier brooch or something else, you can choose that, too. Don't pick trim or anything like that, though, as this will waste extra time. You want to pick an item that must be individually placed. Once you've found the most expensive accessory item that you can still afford, spend all your money on it. Yes, all of it. Buy as many as you can. Once your funds are depleted, cut the fabric and then head over to the mannequin to put it all together. Now, while this is just a throwaway dress in a sense, you'll still want to cut the fabric and sew it properly because quality does play a factor in the percentage of profit you'll make on this dress. My recommendation is that if you're going to make a few of these in a row, go ahead and turn on sewing assist on the game's menu to help speed things along. Then you can turn it back off after you're done. After you've sewn the dress, the last thing you'll want to do before finishing it is place your chosen accessory. Depending on how many you bought, you might only have a few or several hundred. Either way, use Shift to place them continuously so you don't have to keep selecting them individually, then place them all over the dress. It doesn't matter where, as long as they're on it. When you're done, you'll have something that looks a bit insane, but it doesn't matter as it will sell regardless. I can't tell you exactly what you'll make from the sale, but I promise the amount will be significant. Of course, the more expensive your materials were and the more accessories you placed, the more profit you'll see. For example, here are three different dresses I made using everything outlined above: I took the money I made off Dress 1 and put it directly into another nearly identical dress, just with more brooches. Then did the same thing again for Dress 3, which ended up with over 700 brooches. Details Dress 1 Dress 2 Dress 3 Cost of Materials 9,240 16,320 28,880 Labour 249 426 740 Quality Bonus (percent) 149 150 150 Prestige Bonus (percent) 115 115 116 Sell Price 16,259 28,887 51,539 Profit 7,019 12,567 22,659 Each dress had more brooches than the previous one because I had more money to start with, so the cost of materials and labour both increased for each subsequent dress. All in all, I was able to make these three dresses in less than 30 minutes, taking my funds from below 10,000 to over 50,000. Don't forget about commissioned dresses while doing this little trick, because your prestige bonus can significantly increase your profit, and the best way to increase prestige is commissions. If you're looking for an even easier way to increase funds quickly, you can also always resort to mods. NexusMods already features mods for Dressmaker that not only increase funds but also unlock all the game's patterns and materials. However, if mods aren't your thing, then get ready to make Burlap dresses the talk of the town.
