A HI-TECH toothbrush that flosses for you is just the start of Dyson’s dental ambitions. The gadget giant dished out a dozen new products this week – and The Sun’s tech editor Sean Keach got a behind-the-scenes look with chief engineer Jake Dyson. Speaking to The Sun’s Future Tech Feed with Sean Keach, Jake explained how the toothbrush isn’t as surprising as you might think. He revealed that much like vacuuming in the pre-Dyson era, flossing is an awkward chore that many of us skip. It was just the awful pain of vacuuming and losing suction, and having to take this disgusting bag out of the machine that was all clogged up with nasty things,” Jake explained. “And if you think about looking after your teeth, you have to brush your teeth twice a day. “You’re supposed to floss them twice a day. You’re supposed to rinse them twice a day. “And flossing is extremely awkward and difficult to do.” Most read in Tech To get around this issue, Dyson stuffed a tiny camera inside its electric toothbrush. And it works to spot gaps in your teeth and then blast them with a conical jet of mouthrinse. Dyson’s new CameraJet toothbrush is out now – for £420 Credit: Dyson The toothbrush has a built-in camera to look for gaps between teeth – allowing it to blast them with mouthrinse Credit: Dyson “The camera has the ability – and it’s been trained on machine learning from hundreds of thousands of images – to identify all different gum types and teeth and mouth types around the world,” said Jake, who is the son of legendary British inventor Sir James Dyson. “So it’s very, very accurate at targeting the gaps in your mouth.” Of course, if you were brushing with regular toothpaste, you’d find that the foam would get in the way of the camera. So Dyson had to formulate its own non-foaming toothpaste to allow the camera to work properly. Now plenty of people might think twice about putting a camera in their bathroom, never mind inside their mouth. But Jake told The Sun that the system is totally private – no snooping. That’s important, as you can use the MyDyson app to actually watch a live feed from inside your mouth while you brush. “The other interesting thing about the camera is that you can see the inside of your mouth – and it stays on the device,” Jake said. Jake Dyson spoke to The Sun’s tech editor Sean Keach at a special event in Berlin Credit: Sean Keach Dyson unveiled an enormous floor fan with the new (and ultra-quiet) HushJet nozzle design “As a company, we don’t see the data – we can’t see anything. “But what it does mean is that you can record changes in your mouth, and you can identify things in your mouth that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.” One day, Jake reckons this could spark a kind of healthcare revolution. It might involve sharing AI-processed mouth data with your dentist to track your gum health. He also says that there’s a side benefit of the toothbrush: teaching you proper brushing technique. He says many people often scrub frantically, rather than moving from tooth to tooth. But the Dyson CameraJet works best with proper technique. “So the other great thing about the product is it’s training you to brush your teeth properly,” he told The Sun. “If you move in the way you should do, it’ll hit every single gap on time when you’re brushing your teeth, which is the aim.” Of course Dyson showed off plenty more gadgets at its special Berlin event attended by The Sun. That included an absolutely enormous Dyson HushJet Big+Quiet Cool Pure+Formaldehyde. It’s quite a mouthful, but it’s effectively a giant fan and air purifier that’ll set you back £900. It uses the new HushJet nozzle (as seen on the miniature handheld Dyson HushJet fan), which makes it exceptionally quiet. In fact, even at full blast – which really is an impressive amount of airflow – you can hardly hear it. “We have acoustics teams, we have airflow, fluid dynamics,” Jake said. “And they understood that there was a reference to a detail on a jet engine of airplanes, which acts as a silencer on jet engines. That includes the new Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV Robot Vacuum, which comes fitted with a UV light system. “We have a new UV light. We have a green light, which shows up all the dust particles and dirt and the floor and hair,” Jake said. “And then we have this blue light, which shows up germs and dog pee and things like that. “So you can really see when your floor is completely clean and germ-free.” Jake added that if you have pets you’ll “get a shock”. So what’s next for Dyson? The company’s haircare products have been a surprise hit, with the range growing significantly since the first Dyson Supersonic hairdryer in 2016. And now Dyson is eyeing up further ways to expand the new dental range. “We’ve sort of revolutionised what toothbrushes are, and entered into another category,” Jake told The Sun. “Which we hope will explode into multiple products, and it will. “And we’ll take all our research and learning to improve your dental and oral care and the routines.” Comment now
