GPU Reset Recovery Merge Request For GNOME Mutter Submitted

Google Summer of Code 2026 featured a project working on GPU reset recovery for GNOME's Mutter compositor. GSoC has now wrapped up and the project overall was largely successful although some outstanding work remains. In this last week the merge request has been opened to conduct code review on this GPU reset recovery implementation for GNOME. GSoC student Toluwaleke Ogundipe issued his final update today on the GPU reset recovery project. The recovery mechanism is described as "solid" with Mutter now able to survive GPU resets and maintain the live session. The session state is recovered correctly but a few edge cases are being tracked down still. While on-screen frame-buffers, windows, cursors, and text are restored, the Shell UI and desktop background image are not currently restored. Adding code to clear the background cache as well as texture and theme node caches should get the Shell UI elements to reload. Real hardware testing also remains ongoing. Hopefully in time the remaining issues will be ironed out and this code merged as a big improvement for the GNOME desktop.
