Most of us at Android Police use Google Docs daily use it for casual use, though it's still far from perfect even for completing some basic tasks. However, we now have one less reason to complain about Google Docs. The Mountain View tech giant has finally introduced the file support we all have been waiting for. On its Google Workspace Updates website, the company has announced native support for Markdown (.md or .markdown) files in Google Docs. This is one of the most requested features in Google Docs on both Reddit (1, 2, 3) and the company's own support forum (1, 2). So, this is a sigh of relief for those people, too. And for Google, it gives you one less reason to try alternatives like Proton Docs, which has support for Markdown files for more than a couple of years now. What does Markdown file support mean for Google Docs users? As Google has said in its official blog post, Google Docs users will now be able to view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files directly. Not only that, but you'll also be able to 'view rendered previews in Google Drive.' Credit: Google Before the native Markdown support in Google Docs, users had to import and convert Markdown files into a Doc format. However, this wasn't the best way to handle Markdown files, as the conversion often led to altered formatting. Sometimes comments were stripped off, and files were fragmented. All these issues should no longer appear, as you can now handle Markdown files directly in Google Docs. No need to change the file type or get an extension to get things done. You can open a .md file in Docs, make changes to it, while still retaining the original structure of the document. So, if you formatted something on, let's say, Obsidian, you can now bring those documents here on Google Docs. This isn't limited to Workspace customers. If you have a personal Google account, you can also view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files directly in Google Docs. The feature has already started rolling out, though not everyone will get it on the first day of its release. It'll take up to 15 days to roll out to everyone.
