Audio PURDUE HOOPS: SOME CLARITY WOULD BE NICE Purdue’s thing is to be very active in recruiting and evaluating underclassmen, not just to beat competitors to the punch, but also to give evaluation and relationship-building long runways. For one thing, there’s already a backdated commitment from 2026 recruit Jamyn Sondrup, who’ll enroll in ’28 after a two-year mission. Then, the NCAA’s looming five-year eligibility model, once implemented, will create real challenges to advance roster planning for every school in America that looks beyond its own nose in recruiting. If today’s juniors wind up becoming 2028’s fifth-year players, those are the roster spots coaches are recruiting toward right now when they watch juniors-to-be. As things turn out, Purdue is slated to have four fourth-year players next season: Daniel Jacobsen, Jack Benter, CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris. Jacobsen and Benter have redshirted, so they’d not be returnee-eligible on the back end, barring the sort of convoluted waiver process this sudden change is just begging for. But it’s Cox and Harris that would be the two balls in the air for possible returns, too early to know right now one way or the other. In the meantime, recruiting continues, fall visits and game visits are crucial and the squeeze is real. If Purdue were to return multiple fifth-year players in 2028, along with bringing in Sondrup, its roster would be full on paper. Roster attrition is always on the table. Purdue has been a bit of an outlier in its retention, but it won’t be known ’til spring if it might lose anyone to the portal or an early jump to the pros. That’s around the same time as those fifth-year possibilities might have to make some decisions. Purdue could go from a suffocating numbers situation right now to a wide-open one. Or it could basically find out, come spring, that the 2028 class is booked a year early. In the meantime, it has to keep recruiting as normal, but there are going to be inevitable complications for a program that has regularly gotten early commitments, or at least won recruits over so decidedly early that they could be credibly penciled in when laying out future rosters. ON THE FRONTCOURT For as much as Purdue’s become known for size, “physical dominance” might be the better way to put it. It wasn’t the size so much as how physically overwhelming those players were. They took up space, required constant occupation and made the Boilermakers really formidable on the backboard and in the foul columns. Now, aside from Sondrup, there might be a void. Centers Sinan Huan and Isaiah Hill are more wiry than they are wide, more like Daniel Jacobsen. Purdue getting Caden Pierce and Enzo Shahrvin — now on campus, though not yet cleared by the NCAA — was a must to inject physicality into a frontcourt that lost Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn. Pierce and Shahrvin are one-year players. They’ll need to be replaced. If suitable Day 1 replacements are to be found, it seems highly unlikely that it will, or even can, come from the high school ranks. Hence, especially considering the convoluted scholarship fray ahead, is it essential for Purdue to keep building out a 2007 signing class that already includes high-end prospects at the two most important positions on the floor? Painter’s not going to build his team every year through the portal but there’s nothing wrong with being a regular participant as needed. Purdue’s had great success doing just that.
