The decision to remake Final Fantasy 7 and split it across three games has been one that has kept Square Enix busy and made the studio a lot of money for the past decade. You might like to think that with the FF7 Remake trilogy wrapping up in 2027, Square might be thinking about which game in the series to remake next. Sadly, that’s not going to happen. Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P, is incredibly aware of what you all want remake-wise once FF7 is in the rearview mirror. The thing is, not only does Square not intend to give you what you want, Yoshi-P has explained why remaking one of those other Final Fantasy games you want to see reimagined through a modern lens isn’t really realistic. Those Other Final Fantasy Games Are Too Gosh Darn Big Yoshi-P spoke about the logistics of remaking Final Fantasies 6, 8, and 9 during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest. “I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it,” Yoshi-P explained to fans in attendance via a translator (thanks, GamesRadar+). “Look at Final Fantasy 6, it's such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense.” “Now because you are working on the Final Fantasy 7 series, I do get that people would be asking for remakes of other titles. But if we did remake those other titles, we'd probably end up having to release them in four or maybe even five installments,” Yoshi-P adds, throwing the two games that released immediately after the original FF7 along with FF6. We Really Are Never Going To Get That Final Fantasy 9 Remake Square Enix The Final Fantasy games during that era, released through the late ‘90s and into the early 2000’s, were big, beefy games in terms of sheer content and story. Final Fantasy 7 was so big that it has taken three modern-day games to retell its entire story. After getting pixel remasters of the first six games and then a remake trilogy of FF7, there was likely an expectation among fans that Final Fantasy 8 might be next. There was an even stronger expectation that Final Fantasy 9 was up next for a remake as, at some point, in some form, that game existed. In 2021, Nvidia leaked a list of unreleased games, some of them incredibly significant upcoming releases. Almost five years later, there is only one game on that list that either hasn’t been released or, at the very least, has been officially confirmed to exist. That game is a Final Fantasy 9 remake. Expectations for its reveal were through the roof last year when the game turned 25. Instead, we were informed by reliable leakers that somewhere along the way, the remake had effectively been scrapped. Perhaps the reason for that was the realization that it would take five games to tell a remade FF9 story, meaning a team at Square would need to be working on it for the next decade and a half, at least.
