Extreme monsoon rain to batter Gujarat as fresh depression worsens weather

(Photo: Windy)Gujarat is staring at another weekend of dangerous monsoon weather as a fresh depression is expected to trigger very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state, raising the risk of flash floods, urban inundation and widespread waterlogging.The latest development comes as IMD warned that August will witness below-normal rainfall.Meteorologists have warned that many parts of Gujarat could receive an exceptional 300-700 mm spell over the next two days as the weather system sweeps across the region. The event comes just a week after the state witnessed one of its most intense monsoon spells of the season. The heaviest rainfall is forecast on Friday, August 1, when several districts, including major urban centres, could receive 200-400 mm of rain within 24 hours. Such rainfall intensity is expected to overwhelm drainage systems, inundate low-lying areas and significantly disrupt road and rail transport.The fresh depression, moving westwards from central India, is expected to draw enormous amounts of moisture from the Arabian Sea, fuelling continuous bands of intense thunderstorms over Gujarat. On Saturday, August 2, rainfall is expected to ease slightly, with moderate to heavy showers of 40-130 mm likely across much of the state. However, authorities warn that floodwaters and severe waterlogging are expected to persist as rivers remain swollen and runoff from upstream catchments continues.This marks the second consecutive weekend that Gujarat has faced an extreme rainfall event, highlighting the unusually active phase of the southwest monsoon over western India.The prolonged wet spell has already pushed rainfall totals well above normal in several districts.
