Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind can be played in a browser now

A talented modder has made it possible to play The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind with nothing more than your browser of choice. Developer Virtastic released the 1.0 version of the project, titled OpenMW-Web, on GitHub last week. The project is itself based on OpenMW, an open-source version of the game that is continuously in development to this day. For those curious, a demo of the browser build is available that puts players in the middle of a small town with a handful of NPCs, guards, and monsters. It's a great proof of concept, showing that Morrowind does run surprisingly well in just a browser. As per Elder Scrolls tradition, even with little guidance in the demo, you can get up to some shenanigans. There are some bugs and hiccups; this is an Elder Scrolls game, after all. To take full advantage of OpenMW-Web, however, players will need to already own a copy of Morrowind on PC. By pointing the site to locally installed game files, players can then play the entirety of Morrowind via a browser. The project even works with any mods you may have installed for the game. To some, this may seem like it defeats the purpose of playing it in a browser at all. There are, of course, legal issues the project's developer must consider. But if you happen to have some locally installed Morrowind files lying around, OpenMW-Web is still a fun curiosity to play around with. The Morrowind community continues to come up with fascinating ways to experience the original 2002 RPG. Just last week, another modder released a project based on OpenMW that introduced dual-screen support. This build is designed for handhelds like the AYN Thor, which evokes the Nintendo DS. You can also make the game feel more like Final Fantasy 11. Other Morrowind fans desperate for Bethesda to remake the game have long been at work on the Skywind project, which recreates the game within The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Bethesda released a remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion last year, so perhaps a modern version of Morrowind isn't out of the realm of possibility.
