Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity announced its participation in a comprehensive national plan to manage street animals, as part of a unified strategy aimed at protecting citizens’ health and environmental security. The initiative follows directives from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to increase integration among state institutions. The plan was activated following a joint coordination conference hosted by the Egyptian Military Academy, which aimed to unify state efforts in the veterinary sector, end unregulated practices, and raise public awareness. The plan includes establishing shelters and sterilisation centres across governorates, overseen by the General Authority for Veterinary Services, to balance citizen security with environmental safety. To support the early-intervention campaign, the government will provide necessary land, veterinary staff, equipped vehicles, and medicines. The conference was attended by several ministers, the director of the Egyptian Military Academy, representatives from the ministries of social solidarity, justice, and housing, the ambassador coordinator of the National Green Projects Initiative, the head of the General Syndicate of Veterinarians, alongside members of state security, regulatory, and sovereign agencies. The ministry stated that the vaccination and immunisation of street animals are conducted through the Specific Union for Animal Welfare and its member associations. The Union, comprising various Egyptian civil society organisations, acts as a state partner in animal protection. The ministry confirmed that the Union is registered with the Central Unit for Associations and Civil Work under NGO Law No. 149 of 2019. It clarified that the Union, alongside other non-governmental organisations and foundations, is subject to state monitoring, including the oversight and follow-up of all financial transactions. The Ministry of Social Solidarity urged animal welfare organisations to adhere to the controls and instructions issued by the veterinary sector. It also stated it would firmly confront related rumours and address any violations or practices aimed at misleading public opinion or causing disorder in the Egyptian street.
