Clayface comes out in a little under a month and a half, and there hasn’t been much marketing for the upcoming DCU movie. There have been a few trailers, sure, but the movie has more or less been shrouded in secrecy, maybe in an effort to withhold any startling reveals of Matt Hagen’s Clayface in his true, final form as an enormous wad of shape-shifting mud (the version of the classic DC villain that Batman fans are most familiar with), while most of the movie could have him slowly becoming accustomed to his new sludge body. Meanwhile, it hasn’t seemed as if DC is interested in synergizing its comic book slate with Clayface much, either, apart from the miniseries Clayface: Celebrity Dirt. Thankfully, Clayface won’t be arriving without any ceremony, as there’s a series of themed variant covers launching this October that tie into the iconography of the DCU movie beautifully. Clayface Is Found In Every Nook And Cranny This Spooky Season Before Clayface is released, several DC comic books will be released throughout October that feature Clayface movie tie-in variant covers. These covers are drawn by legendary artists and may or may not be authentically representative of what we’ll see in the movie itself, but they might give us our best look yet at how Clayface’s body horror will take shape. So far, participating issues that’ve had Clayface movie variant covers revealed and/or discovered include: Batman #14, by Jim Lee Batman and Robin: Year One - Dynamic Duos #3, by Brian Bolland Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #4, by Frank Cho Detective Comics #1114, by Björn Barends Nightwing #143, by Rafael Albuquerque DCU’s Clayface Is Hopefully More Than A Taste Of Body Horror These covers shed light on a side of Clayface that we’ve seen in the trailers, namely that he’s a goop monster. The bathtub scene suggests he will soon have full control of his abilities, but a few of these covers portray him as a horrific nightmare, particularly Barends’ haunting artwork, which makes the DCU’s Clayface look like he originated from the K.L.A.Y. biome in Absolute Batman’s Ark M. If the movie can meet or exceed the standard of body horror that these covers express (having to watch Matt snip his eyelids open will be particularly nerve-wracking), it should be an incredible treat for fans who are thrilled about the DCU indulging in horror as much as it’s embraced humor and irreverence. Likewise, Clayface: Special Edition #1, out on October 14, collects “a selection of Clayface’s best stories.” The solicitation for this one-shot reads as follows: Get ready for DC Studios’ “Clayface” with a special edition comic featuring iconic stories from Clayface’s twisted history. Featuring Matt Hagen’s first appearance in “The Challenge of Clayface” from DETECTIVE COMICS #298, the iconic “If a Man Be Clay” from BATMAN VILLAINS SECRET FILES AND ORIGINS 2005 #1, and a preview of the hit DC All In series, CLAYFACE: CELEBRITY DIRT #1. Better late than never, Clayface will be receiving a ton of love this Halloween, even if readers will have to go a bit out of their own way to partake in these festivities. It would’ve been neat to have a major crossover event in-universe that centered around Clayface, for instance, but it probably would’ve felt shoehorned for the sake of that synergy. Ironically, Clayface already technically made his debut in Creature Commandos, yet Clayface will serve as an origin story for the DCU villain and probably be many fans and audiences’ introduction to the character. Clayface is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 23, 2026. Release Date October 23, 2026 Director James Watkins Writers Mike Flanagan, Hossein Amini, Bill Finger, Bob Kane Cast Tom Rhys Harries Matt Hagen / Clayface Naomi Ackie Dr. Caitlin Bates An upcoming DCU feature film based on the shapeshifting Batman villain Clayface, purportedly combining tragedy and body horror.
