(Photo: Reuters)The second day of the 2026 US Open brings several of the tournament’s biggest names into action, with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka among those starting their singles campaigns. Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe are also scheduled to take the court as the first-round action continues in New York.Day 1 produced an immediate blockbuster upset as Mariano Navone sent four-time champion Novak Djokovic crashing out in a five-set battle. Djokovic’s defeat came after the Serbian battled vomiting and severe physical discomfort, bringing his remarkable run of 78 consecutive Grand Slam first-round victories to an end.Alcaraz will now begin his title defence against Roman Safiullin. The second-seeded Spaniard comes into the tournament after a lengthy absence from tour-level singles, having missed the French Open and Wimbledon because of a wrist injury. His return to Flushing Meadows had already begun in mixed doubles, where he partnered Serena Williams.Sabalenka, meanwhile, starts her pursuit of a third consecutive US Open crown against Camila Osorio. The world No. 1 has been placed on Arthur Ashe Stadium, while Swiatek will meet Wang Xiyu later in the day and Osaka faces Anastasia Zakharova in the evening session.
