Day 2 schedule: Alcaraz begins title defence, Sabalenka and Swiatek in action

Carlos Alcaraz begins his US Open title defence on Day 2, while Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek also open their campaigns. (Photo: Reuters)The second day of the 2026 US Open brings several of the tournament’s biggest names into action, with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka among those starting their singles campaigns. Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe are also scheduled to take the court as the first-round action continues in New York.Day 1 produced an immediate blockbuster upset as Mariano Navone sent four-time champion Novak Djokovic crashing out in a five-set battle. Djokovic’s defeat came after the Serbian battled vomiting and severe physical discomfort, bringing his remarkable run of 78 consecutive Grand Slam first-round victories to an end.Alcaraz will now begin his title defence against Roman Safiullin. The second-seeded Spaniard comes into the tournament after a lengthy absence from tour-level singles, having missed the French Open and Wimbledon because of a wrist injury. His return to Flushing Meadows had already begun in mixed doubles, where he partnered Serena Williams.Sabalenka, meanwhile, starts her pursuit of a third consecutive US Open crown against Camila Osorio. The world No. 1 has been placed on Arthur Ashe Stadium, while Swiatek will meet Wang Xiyu later in the day and Osaka faces Anastasia Zakharova in the evening session. ALCARAZ, SABALENKA LEAD STAR POWERAlcaraz is scheduled to face Safiullin at 10:30 pm IST, with Sabalenka's clash against Osorio beginning at 9 pm IST. Swiatek's opening match is set for 4:30 am IST on Tuesday, followed by Osaka's contest at 6:30 am.Amanda Anisimova, who finished runner-up last year, begins her campaign against Ashlyn Krueger. Seventh seed Karolina Muchova faces Sinja Kraus, while 15th seed Diana Shnaider takes on Daria Snigur. The men's draw also features a number of intriguing match-ups. Stefanos Tsitsipas meets 10th seed Arthur Fils, Andrey Rublev takes on Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov faces Alexei Popyrin.Stan Wawrinka is also scheduled to play Matteo Berrettini.
