Chennai’s The Dipshit Ladies are turning everyday life into silly songs

Their comedy music finds humour in the everyday, exploring “things that you notice every day but do not talk about, but should be talking about,” says Neerja Ramnath, one of the members of The Dipshit Ladies. Having known each other for many years, Radha Sunder says, they started music just for “fun”, until a friend noticed them and suggested they do a show. They played their first skit at The Angular Festival, an art and music festival in Chennai on May 16 this year, which gave them enough confidence to perform their first solo show on August 29. All our songs are supposed to be silly and funny, because there is so much going on in the world already, says Radha Sunder | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT “I think generally for us, the point of all of this is just that we don’t have enough silliness in the world, and I think all we are trying to do is have fun. Women are so funny , but we don’t get enough spaces to express that funny. But it’s comforting to have each other to be funny with, and it feels a little less daunting to present that back to the world,” says Radha.“All our songs are supposed to be silly and funny, because there is so much going on in the world already, that you might as well just want to have fun for half n hour,” adds Radha.So what is with the name? “It just came out as a joke; we were on the road, and one of us was very irritated and said, “deep s**t ladies” we thought it was very funny and decided to name the band The Dipshit Ladies,” says Radha. The lighthearted observational style is meant to bring out the silliness in the audience rather than striving for musical perfection. “It’s just to say things that we observe, and the general insecurities that we usually hesitate to talk about,” says Radha.“So any conversation we have always turns into laughter, and it’s always about the most random things like, once, how we were talking about the word ‘comedium’, which stands for comedy and a medium, which means it could be somebody who makes you laugh in the afterlife, which is such an obscure topic,” laughs Neerja. For their upcoming show on August 29, the band will bring a mix of old and new work, along with musings from everyday life. Also, the audience is strictly 13-plus. “There is some profanity you might have gathered from the name of the band, so it’s not for children,” says Neerja. “People can expect to be a little surprised and expect something different in the music space because we are not trying to be perfect musicians; we are just trying to have a good time,” says Neerja. The Dipshit Ladies will be performing on August 29 at Kat and Kin Coffee Roasters, Sri Kapaleeswarar Nagar, Neelankarai, from 11am onwards.
