Brit banking executive, 30, jailed after murdering teen with broken bottle in brutal street attack in Portugal

A BRITISH banker has been jailed in Portugal for murdering a local teen with a broken bottle in a brutal street attack. Daniel Dunbar, 30, thrust the jagged glass into the neck of Daniel Galhanas, 19, during a night out in Lisbon’s popular Bairro Alto neighbourhood. Dunbar claimed he was acting in self-defence because he thought Daniel was part of a group who had just attacked his friends – and also said he didn’t realise the bottle was in his hand when he struck him. Dunbar has now been jailed for 15 years but could get more. Daniel’s furious family have blasted the sentence as too lenient and are applying to court to get it increased – the maximum sentence is 25 years. Dunbar, who worked in the Investor Management Department at the Royal Bank of Canada, was on holiday with a group of friends in October 2023 when trouble erupted on a night out. Their group clashed with a gang of local lads they had confronted after seeing them kicking and punching another man. Police mechanic Daniel was not part of the group but Dunbar said he thought he was involved and had just attacked his friend. Shocking video footage showed the teen collapsing to the ground in a pool of blood after suffering fatal injuries to his carotid artery and a jugular vein as the Brits fled the scene. Dunbar flew home but was arrested in the UK in 2024 and extradited to Portugal for a trial which began in March. The three trial judges’ decision has now been delivered at Lisbon’s specialised Central Criminal Court and the 57-page written ruling was made public on Friday. Dunbar had admitted assaulting Daniel but denied murder on the basis of self-defence. Lead judge Armandina Silva Lopes dismissed his claims and said Dunbar had shown “no hesitation” in attacking his victim with a broken glass bottle hidden in his hand. She added: “After delivering a violent blow to his neck and seeing the person he had injured was losing a lot of blood, he did nothing to help him and instead fled the scene. “His actions were not carried out in self-defence.” Dunbar was also ordered to pay £200,000 in compensation to his victim’s family. He told the court: “I should have gone to the police instead of leaving the country but I was immature, I didn’t trust the police and I was afraid of being imprisoned.” An online petition from Daniel’s family demanding justice stated: “Daniel was an honest, responsible young man and a friend to everyone, who always acted in the name of peace. “Now there is a whole family torn apart, trying to survive an immeasurable grief.” Family lawyer Joao Biscaia said: “We consider the sentence imposed far too lenient given the seriousness of the facts. “The sentence is disproportionate and there is a firm intention to appeal.”
