Boy, seven, is still fighting for his life after incident at Essex beach that killed Bangladeshi politician's wife and their 15-year-old daughter

A seven-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was swept away at sea by a current that drowned a Bangladeshi politician's wife and teenage daughter.Musa Ahmed was airlifted to hospital on July 22 following a 'family day out' at West Mersea Beach.His 15-year-old cousin, Sameeha Rahman, and her mother Shelina Rahman, 41, died after rushing into the water to try to help the child.A number of family members were also taken to hospital and are recovering, Essex Police said.Musa remains in a critical condition following the incident.Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher said: 'We are continuing to support Shelina and Sameeha's family through this extremely difficult time.'They had been enjoying a family day at the beach together when this tragedy happened.'We are working to establish the circumstances which led up to this incident and our inquiries are ongoing. Sameeha Rahman, 15, (pictured with father Dr Mansur Rahman) died alongside her mother when she bravely tried to rescue a young child who had got into difficulty in the water It was revealed the victims in the incident were British-Bangladeshi mother Shelina Rahman (pictured), a teacher in her 40s, and her 15-year-old daughter The woman and girl were named as Shelina and Sameeha Rahman, the wife and daughter of Dr Mansur Rahman, pictured, who is the leader of Jubo Dal UK, youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party'We have spoken to a number of key witnesses and will continue to do so over the coming days and will work with partners including the fire service, local council, and coastguard.'Essex Police previously said officers were called by the ambulance service at 5.35pm on July 22 after reports several people had got into difficulty in the water near Seaview Avenue.The East of England Ambulance Service said one patient was transported by air and three taken by road to hospital after the incident at Sea View Holiday Park.Musa's father Shahin Ahmed released a statement early on Monday in which he called for 'a review of safety measures' at the site.'I strongly agree with the calls from local residents for a review of safety measures at West Mersea Beach, including the provision of additional life–saving equipment and clear warning signage,' he said.'While no action now can undo the pain we are suffering, we hope lessons can be learned to help prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.'Labour MP Naz Shah, for Bradford West, last week paid a personal tribute to Ms Rahman and her daughter.She told the Daily Mail: 'I'm devastated. They're a lovely, lovely family, I'm absolutely heartbroken for them, it's sent shockwaves through the community. And my thanks to the emergency services [who responded to the incident].'Several people had got into difficulty in the water amid high tides at Sea View Holiday Park, near Colchester, at around 5.30pm on Wednesday.It is understood the family was enjoying a summer holiday trip out when the tragedy unfolded during an incoming high tide at West Mersea Beach, which swept seven-year-old Musa away in the current.Both Mrs Rahman and Sameeha attempted to rescue him, only to get into difficulty themselves.Mrs Rahman was wife of politician Dr Mansur Rahman, leader of Jubo Dal UK – the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) – and daughter to Mujibur Rahman, former vice president of the UK BNP, originally from Chhatak Upazila in Sylhet, Bangladesh.One beach hut owner told how the 'horrific' scenario unfolded as the woman was 'trying to save [her] family', adding: 'Apparently she did all she could and ended up dying.'In a social media tribute, a family friend said: 'With deep sorrow and a heavy heart, we inform you that the wife of the Joint Secretary of the UK Youth Wing, beloved Dr. Sheikh [Mansur Rahman], and his 15-year-old daughter [...] drowned in the sea yesterday. The deceased has been confirmed by the police. Police at the scene at West Mersea after the tragedy A third person was hospitalised in a serious condition, while two others were left with non-life-threatening injuries 'We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the forgiveness of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.'In a condolence message, the BNP Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said: 'There are no words adequate enough to express sympathy to the bereaved families in the face of such a tragic loss.'I pray that Almighty Allah grants the departed souls Jannatul Ferdous and gives their grieving family members the strength and patience to endure this immense sorrow.'An owner of a nearby beach hut told the Daily Mail: 'We heard the helicopter last night and the search and rescue operation.'We saw all the emergency services. We have a beach hut and live locally as well.'I have heard the poor woman was trying to save the family and then has died. It's horrific. It sounds like a worst nightmare. Apparently she did all she could and ended up dying.'At least six ambulances, a dozen police cars, a fire engine, a lifeboat, two air ambulances and a coastguard helicopter were sent to the scene on Wednesday.One coastguard truck remained on the shingle beach into the night near an area which was cordoned off with a wind break.Other emergency vehicles were parked behind a row of multi-coloured pastel beach huts beside the West Mersea Holiday Park.The area is known for its strong currents that can take swimmers and tourists by surprise.Prime Minister Andy Burnham thanked emergency services during a visit to Harlow, Essex, describing the events as 'very, very sad'.Chief Inspector Michelle Sparks, district commander for Colchester, thanked the local community for their response to the incident.She said: 'There were members of the public who rushed to help the family and I want to thank them for their courage and selflessness.'Since this tragic incident we have also seen an outpouring of support and sympathy.'At times of tragedy you get to see how strong a community is, and we have a fantastic community on Mersea Island, and across the Colchester district.'
