Andy Carroll says 'well known footballers' told him they have been sexually assaulted after he opened up about his own abuse

Andy Carroll has revealed that other 'well known footballers' have contacted him to say they have also been sexually assaulted after he opened up about his own abuse. The 37-year-old footballer shared in Owning It, his new book, that he was 'traumatically' assaulted several years ago after having a 'few drinks'. Carroll said he woke up after sleeping naked to find a 'celebrity mate' attempting to give him oral sex in an ordeal he described as 'devastating'. The uncovering of court documents later revealed the ex-Liverpool striker's abuser to have been Kevin Adams, 59, who appeared on BBC dance show Fame Academy. Adams was convicted of sexual assault in 2023 and sentenced to 20 months in prison over the attack. Carroll said on Piers Morgan Uncensored this week that he will 'probably never get over it', but added that others who had suffered similar attacks have reached out to him in the weeks after he made the ordeal public. He said: 'People that I know really well that have come to me with similar things happened to them. People in football as well - well known footballers. 'I've had phone calls off them saying "thanks". I've been beating myself up about it and as soon as I've said it the support I've received has been massive. Andy Carroll is pictured on Saturday, October 10, before Dagenham & Redbridge's game against Hemel Hempstead in Chigwell Kevin Adams (pictured), now 59, was convicted of sexual assault in 2023 and sentenced to 20 months in prison over the attack'And I think that's the main thing really for me - that if I said that five years ago when it happened maybe I would have felt a lot better now and then got over it.'There's certain things you can't get over and I'll never, ever get over that. But now I know that people can see who I was then, in that time, and what I've been through and they help me and support me.' The footballer, who now plays for National League side Dagenham & Redbridge, told previously how the attack happened the evening after a Newcastle game when Adams invited himself around to watch a boxing match. Carroll played for the Magpies between 2006 and 2011, before returning to the club in 2019 for two seasons. 'I was playing down south somewhere and on my way home this guy texts to ask what am I up to,' he added. 'When he texts again to ask if he can come round to watch the boxing with me, my partner tells me to stop pieing him off (putting him off).'He takes over the kitchen, mixing drinks. I start to feel lightheaded and think has he slipped me something. "Right, time for bed", I say to him, "I'll order you a taxi".'"Oh no," he says, "I'll stay in the spare room".'He then claimed he awoke to find Adams sexually assaulting him.'I sleep naked and when I wake up this guy is under the duvet trying to give me a blowjob.'Carroll went on to 'smack' him as he ordered him out the house. 'I smack him as hard as I can and he hits the deck,' he wrote. Carroll said the attack occurred during his days as a Newcastle Adams was subsequently found guilty of sexual offences and imprisoned. He was also placed on the Sex Offender Register and banned from entering the village where Carroll lived.Adams had tried to argue in his defence that he had been assaulted by Carroll but the judge told him: 'You spun a literally incredible tale in which you painted yourself as the victim. You've actually started to believe your own lies.'Before he was sentenced, Adams had run a children's dance school, the Kevin Adams Academy, in Harlow, Essex. Records show that the company ceased operations in 2022. Carroll also told how he was left in agony before the release of his book - and had not even told his parents or friends about what he had been through. 'Until two weeks ago when it came out still in the back of my head I was like, "when is it going to drop? When is the name going to come out?"'It was really, really difficult. So when the name came out I kind of freaked out and I was just like, "I don't want to speak to anyone." 'And I shut myself away. Before that I was kind of alright. It was out there, that happened. I'm at Dagenham at the moment and the lads there have been fantastic. The staff and everything.'But then when the name was ready to come out I just panicked and I just didn't know what to do. The social media comments that I've been getting and receiving - that's giving me a little bit of support to say, ‘yeah, go on then, get it out there and people will be aware of this because no-one talks about it'.The Gateshead-born star joined Dagenham in 2025, and has so far made 16 appearances for the club, scoring six goals. Prior to that he enjoyed spells at West Ham United, Newcastle United and Liverpool in the Premier League. He also made nine appearances for England, scoring twice.
