Published Oct 25, 2026, 6:00 AM EDT Tim has been covering technology for almost 20 years, in that time spanning a broad range of topics from security to product reviews. He is especially focused on the Apple ecosystem, productivity, and consumer advice. Over the years Tim has written thousands of articles, reviews, and round-ups in addition to producing video content and original photography. A graduate of journalism, he found his footing as a freelancer with a laptop and loves how he is able to work from practically anywhere. Now a Senior Editor for iPhone, Mac, and Smart Home at How-To Geek, Tim still loves to write. He can also be found crafting round-ups and productivity posts for the Zapier blog. Earlier in his career Tim spent nearly a decade as a writer and eventually Apple section editor for MakeUseOf. Tim currently lives in Brisbane, Australia. Outside of work he loves to hike and work out, play video games, and spend quality time with his wonderful partner and two cats Inka and Roger. A custom-built home is all about designing elements that feel perfectly adapted to your space and routine. With a 3D printer, you can retroactively apply this concept to the objects inside your home, to great effect. Prints that hide and organize messy cables Don’t let wires ruin your home Few things ruin a clean setup quite like a rat’s nest of cables. Speaking from experience, it’s too easy to become desensitized to these wires. You simply stop noticing them after they’ve been there for a while, even if your intention was to sort out the mess long ago. Fortunately, you can 3D print your way out of the problem. You’ll find all manner of models for routing cables, managing the slack, and keeping things neat ready to download and use. These allow you to attach cables to the underside of desks and the back of furniture, rather than having them strewn across the floor. If you’re happy to get the drywall saw out you can print cable passthroughs and parametric grommets for an even cleaner, permanent solution. LED diffusing strips For that subtle glow LED strip lights are functional and fun, allowing you to add subtle customizable lighting to your home and go full party mode when the mood takes you. I’d recommend rolling your own solution with WLED, since you’ll keep costs down and have the freedom to control the strips however you like (and even sync it with platforms like Home Assistant). One thing you should absolutely consider doing is adding a diffuser to your LED strips to scatter the light to cast more of a glow so that individual LEDs are less obvious. A cheap way to do this that fits virtually any installation in your home is to 3D print your own from clear filament. Custom fixtures for smart home sensors and other devices Hide your sensors, speakers, and more Credit: Adam Davidson / How-To Geek Not everyone wants a smart home to look like a smart home. Sensors, smart speakers, and custom-built devices can look out of place or sit in awkward places until you mount them somewhere permanent. Presence sensors are great, but they’re best placed up high so they can survey the entire room, while smart speakers don’t necessarily need to sit on a desk and can be mounted on the wall. You can solve both of these with a 3D-printed mount, and there are many solutions ready to print that you can download for free. Likewise, microcontrollers power a lot of DIY sensors for platforms like Home Assistant, and they’re especially useful as Bluetooth proxies for presence detection and controlling additional devices like smart blinds. You can hide the ESP32 and USB adapter it’s plugged into with a simple 3D print that blends into the room. Kitchen space-savers Big ideas, small price tag Credit: steyn.berens / MakerWorld New kitchens incorporate a lot of smart tricks to save space and organize things, but not everyone has the money for a brand new kitchen. Thankfully, there are some killer 3D printing ideas that will bring utility to your kitchen without the huge price tag. By far my favorite of these are the kitchen cupboard pot lid holders that solve the age-old question of where you put your pot lids when not in use. They attach to the door or sides of your cupboards, making use of dead space and giving you more room to store pots in the most efficient manner. I’m also a big fan of mounting cling wrap and other rolls up high so that they’re easy to access. More smart ideas include under cabinet storage for cutting boards, pan stackers, mug shelves, cleaning spray holders, and storage tailored to appliances like Kitchenaid mixer attachments. Stands and holders to stash everything Simple upgrades that look good and serve a purpose Credit: Draahl / MakerWorld Have a look at your desk, entertainment unit, or kitchen counter. Do you see a pair of headphones, left casually on the desk? Are there game controllers loosely placed on the credenza? Do you perpetually leave small items or mail out on the benchtop? When you give these items a home, you tick two boxes: you’ll always know where to find them, and they’ll look better for it. Those headphones can probably be stashed on the far side of the desk using a 3D printed hook or a wall mount. Controller stands can bevisually-pleasing and subtle, or they can have a novelty charm to bring out some personality. Your kitchen counters will be better with some small bins and mail organizers to hold those items. Being able to make them yourself gives you creative freedom to pick filament and designs that match your space and feel like part of the room. Modular organizers for drawers and walls Gridfinity, and beyond! Nothing makes a space feel more purpose-built than adapting it perfectly to match your use case. Modular and customizable storage systems like Gridfinity and vertically-mounted organization systems like Multiboard allow you to put every inch of space to use in a manner that feels custom-built. With Gridfinity, you can turn your kitchen junk drawer into a manageable void where everything has its place. Wall storage lets you turn your garage, workshop, or even office into a truly functional space where the items that matter most always have a home and are easy to reach. Projects like this are often regarded as the best reasons to own a 3D printer for a reason. The only consideration is that you’ll need to put some real thought into how you want to organize your space before committing time and filament to realize your vision. Hopefully these ideas will inspire you to fire up your 3D printer and level up your home. It’s not just your living space that can benefit, though; check out how a 3D printer can kick-start your hobbies too.
