20-Year-Old Sentenced to Life for Killing Ukrainian Linguist, Nationalist

All three dogs involved in the examination produced the same result, according to the court.Judges also cited a facial-comparison examination, surveillance footage documenting Zinchenko’s movements through Lviv and digital evidence recovered from his devices. Investigators found that Zinchenko had searched for Farion’s personal information, obtained her telephone number and saved identifying details about her. He also searched for electricity outage schedules covering Masaryka Street, where she lived.According to the verdict, Zinchenko researched ammunition, silencers and ways to convert firearms. The court said he purchased a converted Stalker 2906 pistol online in April 2024, although investigators did not recover or conclusively identify the weapon used to kill Farion.Prosecutors also presented records showing that Zinchenko purchased clothing and accessories resembling those worn by the suspect, including a Panama hat, glasses, gloves and a camera. He traveled from Dnipro to Lviv on July 8 and rented several apartments in the city before the attack.Farion shot outside her Lviv homeFarion was shot in the head near the entrance to her apartment building on Masaryka Street in Lviv on July 19, 2024.Witnesses heard the shot and saw a young man run from the courtyard. Farion was taken to St. Panteleimon Hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery but died several hours later at age 60.Farion had been attacked shortly after leaving her home.Police detained Zinchenko at his family home in Dnipro on July 25 following a nationwide search. He was 18 at the time of his arrest.A court subsequently ordered him held without bail while investigators examined surveillance footage, witness statements and evidence collected during searches. Authorities believed the killing had been carefully planned.Prosecutors said the investigation involved more than 60 forensic examinations, interviews with over 1,500 people and the analysis of extensive surveillance-camera footage.Who was Iryna Farion?Farion was a linguist, professor and prominent advocate for the Ukrainian language. She taught at Lviv Polytechnic National University and represented the nationalist Svoboda party in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s legislature, from 2012 to 2014.Her uncompromising statements about the use of Russian in Ukraine frequently generated controversy, particularly after Russia’s full-scale invasion.Thousands attended her funeral in Lviv on July 22, 2024. She was buried at the city’s historic Lychakiv Cemetery.Zinchenko’s defense maintained that prosecutors had failed to prove he fired the fatal shot.
