2 Philippine macaques, 15 native birds rescued in Sorsogon

Photo courtesy of DENR Bicol MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) rescued two Philippine long-tailed macaques and 15 native birds kept in captivity in Sitio Madan-an, Barangay Bibincahan, Sorsogon, the agency said. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Sorsogon said the rescue operation was launched after the Sorsogon City Veterinary Office, through Dr. Jose Maria G. Alindogan, reported a captive primate. During an inspection, the PENRO Sorsogon Wildlife Enforcement Team found undocumented wildlife in captivity: two Philippine long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis philippensis), 12 white-eared brown doves (Phapitreron leucotis), two Philippine hanging parrots (Loriculus philippensis), and one black-chinned fruit dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri). Article continues after this advertisement READ: Rare white monkey spotted in Sultan Kudarat village The 15 rescued birds were released at the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, while the two Philippine long-tailed macaques were transported to the Albay Park and Wildlife Rescue Center for assessment and rehabilitation. PENRO Sorsogon said the Philippine hanging parrot is classified as “Critically Endangered” under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09. The Philippine long-tailed macaque, white-eared brown dove, and black-chinned fruit dove are classified as “Other Wildlife Species.” The DENR Bicol, headed by Regional Executive Director Francisco E. Milla Jr., said the operation is part of its efforts to strengthen wildlife protection and law enforcement.
