During these six decades of movies, TV shows, and other media, many intelligent characters have been introduced. That’s to be expected given that this is a science fiction property populated with many different species, entities, and artificial creations across not just the main reality, but multiple other universes and timelines. That intelligence can come in different forms. Many of the best Star Trek characters are experts in fields like science and mathematics, which makes sense considering that such knowledge would be necessary to perform the majority of roles aboard a starship or space station. For others, that intelligence is presented in other ways, such as being a calculating strategist, a well-read historian, or counseling others with their wisdom and experience. Some are naturally born smart, while others have had their intelligence increased through other means. With so much brainpower flowing through the Star Trek universe, it makes this franchise one of the most complex and thoughtful ones within the sci-fi genre. Of these intellectually-gifted characters, 10 in particular stand out as the smartest of the bunch. Along with these individuals being compelling in terms of their narrative arcs, they have also shined on the cerebral front time and time again. 10 Elim Garak Paramount Television Garak repeatedly claimed to be a simple tailor in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but the starring characters learned this was far from the truth. As a former spy for Cardassia’s Obsidian Order, Garak was well-versed in the arts of intelligence-gathering, subterfuge, covert operations, and even assassination. Thinking 10 steps ahead for his plans and schemes was child’s play for him, and while Garak’s true allegiances weren’t always clear during Deep Space Nine’s earlier seasons, his unique set of skills proved to be a valuable asset for the Federation during the Dominion War. 9 Trip Tucker Paramount Television As the chief engineer of Earth’s first Warp 5-capable ship, Charles “Trip” Tucker was operating in uncharted territory during Star Trek: Enterprise. With the Enterprise (NX-01) encountering threats and phenomena never faced by humanity before, Trip frequently came up with improvised and outside-the-box solutions in order to keep the ship running. These incidents also served as a form of troubleshooting, as Trip’s ingenious thinking paved the way for the advancement of Starfleet’s vessels. Without his experiences, the rest of the events in the Star Trek timeline might never have happened. 8 Paul Stamets MovieStillsDB Believing that spores and mycelia are the “building blocks of energy across the universe,” Star Trek: Discovery's Paul Stamets created the Discovery’s spore drive, which allowed it to travel faster than any warp-capable vessel, even in the 32nd century. He also found a way to integrate a tardigrade-like creature’s DNA into himself so he could safely jump the ship anywhere in the galaxy. All this, combined with the various other problems he solved as Discovery’s chief engineer, made Paul one of the smartest individuals across two eras separated by nearly a millennium. It’s just unfortunate that the spore drive couldn’t be replicated for other ships. 7 Julian Bashir Paramount Television Julian Bashir ranks as one of the best Star Trek doctors, with his medical expertise having saved countless people during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. However, it was revealed in “Doctor Bashir, I Presume?” that his impressive intelligence came from an illegal genetic engineering procedure his parents put him through as a child when they noticed his difficulty with learning. As a result, Bashir not only became mentally superior to most humans, but also had enhanced physical abilities, like hand-eye coordination. However, upon learning as a teenager what had been done to him, he found ways to hide the true extent of his brilliance until his secret was uncovered. 6 Guinan MovieStillsDB As an El-Alurian, Guinan has lived for centuries and gone through a variety of experiences, from encounters with Q to meeting Mark Twain. Additionally, her species is known for being listeners, patient, and empathetic. That made an excellent fit to be the bartender of Ten Forward on the Enteprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. So, while Guinan did display aptitude in numerous subjects, she shined the brightest on the intelligence front when she counseled the show’s characters through their problems, struggles, and dilemmas. Hers is a different type of intelligence than usually presented in Star Trek, but no less important. 5 Seven of Nine As a former Borg drone, Seven of Nine retained much of the information she absorbed while being part of the Collective. She put her knowledge to good use on Star Trek: Voyager, primarily by working in the ship’s astrometric lab, which she upgraded with Borg technology. Her rational and analytical brain helped the ship get out of many jams in the series’ latter seasons, and it remained intact during Star Trek: Picard even as she behaved more humanly. That made her a well-rounded pick to captain the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-G). 4 Spock As the science officer aboard the USS Enterprise during Star Trek: The Original Series, its follow-up movies, and the prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, intelligence is one of the main reasons Spock is so beloved. His scientific knowledge paired with his Vulcan logic enabled him to devise many solutions to problems encountered on the iconic ship. The Prime Timeline’s Spock would later utilize his intelligence in a different way by serving as a Federation ambassador and helping to unify the Vulcans and Romulans. The Kelvin timeline’s Spock was also shown to be extremely intellectually capable, though in different ways given how his life’s path diverged from his Prime counterpart’s. 3 Data Everett The most well-known of Dr. Noonien Soong’s androids, Data’s positronic brain had a storage capacity of eight hundred quadrillion bits and could conduct 60 trillion operations per second. These capabilities made him more than worthy of serving as the chief operations officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation, not to mention one of the most intelligent sentient beings in the universe. The Data seen in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was even more impressive, as he also had the memories of Lore, B-4, and Soong’s son Altan. Combined with the human emotions he started expressing in Star Trek Generations, this gave audiences the most “human” version of Data yet. 2 The Doctor Everett The Doctor started out on Star Trek: Voyager as a standard Emergency Medical Program, and only functioned within the parameters of his original programming. However, as he continued serving as Voyager’s chief medical officer, The Doctor gained his own personality and expanded that programming. This allowed him to learn about other fields and develop personal interests, and thus become a more compelling character. With The Doctor still being active hundreds of years later, as seen in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, he’s collected multiple lifetimes' worth of knowledge and experiences. 1 Q MovieStillsDB There’s no beating Q in the intelligence department considering that he was a nearly-omnipotent being able to bend the laws of physics and reality to his will through his various Star Trek appearances. While this didn’t make him omniscient, the knowledge he did possess, combined with his manipulative personality, made him a formidable antagonist on Star Trek: The Next Generation and other shows. Even in stories where Q’s powers were dwindling or taken away, he retained his scheming and calculating personality. Fortunately, his schemes were never truly malevolent, but rather carried out as pranks for his own amusement, or to teach unconventional lessons to Star Trek characters like Picard and Janeway.
