Zach Cregger is the perfect director to helm Resident Evil: Producers

What makes Resident Evil frightening has never been limited to its monsters. The games built their horror around uncertainty. Be it the dark corridor that may or may not contain something waiting to attack or the dwindling ammunition, or worse: the wrong weapon at the wrong time and the constant calculation of whether to fight or run. For the new film, filmmaker Zach Cregger is attempting to bring that particular tension to the big screen.The Barbarian director’s approach to the franchise is rooted in the experience of playing the games, with the film designed around survival, resource management and escalating danger. According to the producers, Cregger’s intention was not simply to borrow the Resident Evil name and mythology, but to recreate the feeling of being trapped inside its world.Producer Miri Yoon notes that Cregger amplifies many of the franchise’s most beloved elements, including “extreme threat, survival horror, resource management, and massive set pieces.” He adds, “Zach is the perfect filmmaker for RESIDENT EVIL because he’s a true gamer and knows what it feels like to have lived the narrative of the game.” That understanding of the games was particularly important to producer Robert Kulzer, who has been a key player in the Resident Evil franchise for 30 years. Kulzer recalls meeting Cregger at a time when Barbarian had put the filmmaker firmly on the horror map. What stood out was Cregger’s desire to reproduce the helplessness and uncertainty that players experience while navigating the Resident Evil universe.“Barbarians had just come out, and the town was buzzing about Zach, who was going to singlehandedly re-invent horror movies. Zach wanted to recreate the experience of when he and a whole generation of gamers were sucked into the vortex of Resident Evil and seemed just as doomed as the characters. That world’s darkness, claustrophobia, and the inevitability of horrific events unfolding are stacked against the lack of experience, preparation and proper weaponry of the player facing its horrors. Zach pitched a movie that was happening in real time: one guy, one mission, one goal and with every step the world around him turns more to s***.” The real-time structure, Kulzer says, was part of Cregger’s larger ambition to make the audience feel as though they were experiencing the horror alongside the protagonist rather than watching it from a safe distance.“Zach wanted to create a ride, an immersive experience,” Kulzer adds. “He wanted to take the audience by the hand in minute one, take them on this journey, and not let them go till minute 90. Zach delivered all that and more.”That emphasis on immersion is the fundamental difference between game horror and conventional cinematic horror. Producer Asad Qizilbash believes that is where Cregger’s filmmaking instincts come into play. “The best Resident Evil games don’t just scare you; they make you afraid of what’s coming next. That’s cinema. Zach is brilliant at weaponizing tension, then breaking it with something shocking, strange or darkly funny. That filmmaker instinct he has, is perfect for RESIDENT EVIL: you think you know what’s going to happen, and then Zach shows you something you never expected.”For the filmmakers, then, the appeal of Cregger lies as much in his understanding of horror as in his familiarity with the games.
