We're all always connected to the internet on a multitude of devices throughout the day, which makes any router reboot frustrating. The couple of minutes you have to sit through as every device on the network reconnects to the internet are infuriating even if they come about once a week. That's only until you realize that your router probably restarts a lot more without you knowing. Every time one of my devices drops Wi-Fi and reconnects, or I see brief internet blackouts that fix themselves after a minute, I've blamed my ISP, my modem, or some random network hiccup. I've only just found out that my router itself may have rebooted and carried on as if nothing happened. Now, a router restart sounds like something you'd notice, but routers are superb at making their own interruptions look like ordinary connectivity problems. Once you know where to look, you may find that yours has been restarting far more often than you ever suspected. Your router can reboot without asking you There's an emergency restart button in there When a router decides that it needs to restart, it doesn't always need you to reach for the power plug. Most modern routers, from a $20 piece you got off Craigslist to enterprise gear, run operating systems with watchdog mechanisms designed to detect when the device, or a critical service inside it, stops responding properly. If the watchdog doesn't receive the expected response, it can force the router to restart and recover. It might sound sinister, but it really isn't. A watchdog is essentially the networking equivalent of someone asking "Are you still alive?" repeatedly. If the answer stops arriving, the router tends to assume that something has gone terribly wrong and pulls the emergency brake. Plenty of problems can leave a router in this state, from software bugs and stalled services, to overloaded systems and even hardware problems. There are other ways to get an unsolicited reboot, too. Firmware updates can end up restarting a router after installation, some models support scheduled reboots, and ISP-managed gateways can receive maintenance instructions remotely. A sudden power interruption or thermal problem can obviously produce the same result. However, this sort of reboot doesn't necessarily announce itself as one. Your Wi-Fi disappears, devices reconnect, and everything carries on. Unless you're sitting vigilantly and watching the router at precisely that moment, there may be nothing memorable about it. Still, there's always a way to find out when it last happened. The reboot can erase the evidence Your router may forget the crime scene the moment it restarts Even though the average user never truly bothers with it, the reboot itself can make the evidence harder to find. Many consumer routers keep their system logs in volatile memory rather than permanently storing every event on the device. That makes sense for hardware with limited storage, but RAM has one rather inconvenient property — if you reboot the router, then whatever was sitting there will be gone. As such, the event you want to investigate can effectively clean up after itself. The router may crash, become unresponsive, restart, and then, it'll come back with a fresh log buffer. OpenWrt, for example, uses a circular log buffer in RAM by default, meaning a reboot clears it and older entries can also be overwritten as new ones arrive. OpenWrt is a Linux-based OS designed for devices like routers and network gateways. Again, this might sound sinister and come off as the router trying to cover its own tracks, but it's just a consequence of how consumer networking hardware is designed. Permanent logging consumes storage and creates constant writes, while most home users don't need an exhaustive historical record of every system event. On better-equipped hardware, though, this difference becomes obvious. Enterprise routers, for example, commonly preserve logs or send them to a separate syslog server, so a reboot leaves a trail somewhere else. With a typical home router, however, the trail may disappear with the reboot. Fortunately, you can still catch the next one. Find out when your router last restarted The uptime counter is the easiest way to catch it To find evidence of these tiny, inconsequential restarts, start with your router's uptime, which is the simplest evidence. Open its administration page or companion app and look under sections such as Status, System Information, Administration, or Logs. The exact location of this setting varies by manufacturer, but you're looking for a value labeled "Uptime." If your router has supposedly been running for months but reports something like "14 hours," that's evidence of a recent restart. This sort of short uptime isn't necessarily bad news, though. The router could have installed firmware, followed a scheduled reboot, recovered from a temporary software failure, or simply lost power. The important clue is repetition — if you check periodically and keep finding that uptime has mysteriously returned to zero, you have a pattern worth investigating. A repeatedly-restarting router is telling you something. It's also a good idea to enable persistent logging if your firmware supports it. Better still, send logs to another device using remote syslog. That way, when the router restarts, the evidence won't be sitting inside the machine that just forgot everything. You can then correlate the restart with firmware updates, temperature problems, power interruptions, or software errors. And if the reboots keep happening every few days, don't treat them as an eccentricity of your internet connection. Check the power supply, ventilation, firmware, configuration, and available memory before blaming the ISP. A router that repeatedly restarts is telling you something, and all you need to do is to stop letting it erase the message. Networking equipment is built to recover from problems, and a successful recovery can be so uneventful that you never think to question it. It's generally a good thing, but the trouble begins when "it fixed itself" becomes the explanation for a problem that keeps returning. We tend to think of our routers as appliances instead of the small computers that they are. When something repeatedly goes wrong, it's useful to check what happened while you weren't looking. Once you start paying attention to that, an unexplained outage stops being an annoyance and becomes a useful diagnostic clue.
