For one, we know a handheld is in the works, but a fully fledged console is also coming. While many pundits expected the Xbox brand to retract after the appointment of current CEO Asha Sharma, the company seems to be making major efforts to rejuvenate the brand, amid crushing layoffs. While many leaks have come out since about the Project Helix console, things have since changed. According to a report from Fortune, Project Helix could be pricier than expected [via GR]. Based on the report, we'll likely see the Xbox Project Helix console release by "Christmas 2028," which isn't a shocker. Although Sony hasn't shared their updated timeline for the PlayStation 6, 2028 seems like a safe bet, especially as publishers look to weather the current economic storm. What concerns many fans is the price, and the first reported figures aren't ideal. Right now, the Xbox Project Helix console could hit $1200-$1800 USD. 2028 is so far away, and the industry has already changed so much in 2026 that it's hard to imagine what everything will look like. By then, Sony will have followed through on its plan to abandon physical disc production, and we could be looking at an all-digital future outside the Switch 2. Microsoft has a lot of decisions to make about the Xbox brand and how it intends to differentiate itself from Sony at this point. If Xbox could ship a console model with a physical disc drive, it could be a huge move in a brutal battle for dominance.
