Especially since Xbox Game Pass just handed subscribers one of the best horror games of the 21st century — Mouthwashing. This award-winning gem from indie developer Wrong Organ is a bite-sized two-hour haunt on a PSX-style spaceship that's hauling mouthwash. I won't spoil what happens, but the gist is that you're a member of a dying crew stranded on a shipwrecked space freighter that quickly unravels into a psychedelic fever dream with cartoon horses and cannibalism. As Of Today, Mouthwashing Is Available On Xbox, PS5, And Nintendo Switch Mouthwashing won both Players' Choice and Best Narrative at The Horror Game Awards (2024), and was nominated at the DICE Awards (28th Annual) for Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game, Best Narrative at GDC 2025, and Game of the Year at The Indie Game Awards (2024). More importantly, it came 9th in The Gamer's GOTY awards. TLDR: it's good. So, if you missed it in 2024, or just didn't have a PC to play it on at the time, dim the lights, hop aboard the Tulpar, and lose yourself in one of the most unnerving first-person horrors since Amnesia. But don't worry if you don't have an Xbox, because Mouthwashing is now available on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch for $12.99. As for PC players who missed the train, the game is also 40% off on Steam, so you can pick it up for the price of a slightly expensive bottle of mouthwash. If Mouthwashing left you craving more weird indie horror, publisher Critical Reflex has a couple of other titles on the radar. Grobnopolis serves up slow, oppressive body horror in a world where "the sun is gone" and "the mines are bleeding," while Tiny Chills - Not From Ear tackles a subtle alien invasion by tasking you with cleaning out the invaders "ear by ear". Demos for both are available to try now on Steam. I'd also suggest trying Photomaly, which is 30% off on Steam right now. In the game, you manage a photo studio where "unexpected events" unravel as you snap pictures for clients. Men in Black show up at your shop and there are strange paranormal encounters lurking in the alleyway, complete with a trip to the Backrooms. Again, I won't spoil the story, but it has a really satisfying gameplay loop to wrap the horror in.
