X-Men's First MCU Villain Is So Much Better Than Magneto

The MCU's upcoming X-Men reboot just revealed more of its official cast at Disney's major D23 ultimate fan event, including the major surprise that Adam Driver is set to finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the movie's new villain. However, Driver isn't playing the classic X-Men villain many likely assumed he would. Without a doubt, Magneto is one of the greatest Marvel villains of all time, a truly dynamic foe with origins, powers, and motivations that are nothing less than iconic since he first appeared in 1963's X-Men #1 from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. However, this has naturally led to the Master of Magnetism dominating adaptations both on the small and big screen. While a new Magneto absolutely could and should be featured at some point in the MCU's future, I'm actually very excited about Adam Driver's new mutant villain. With Ian McKellen's Magneto already returning in upcoming MCU movies, it feels right that Adam Driver has not been cast as a new Erik Lensherr, and is instead playing a villain who can easily be just as dynamic a foe for the MCU's new X-Men. Adam Driver Finally Joins The MCU (But Not As Magneto) Although Adam Driver wasn't physically present at D23's Friday night Entertainment Showcase with the rest of the new X-Men cast, he did record a video from an empty soundstage at Pinewood, joking that he thought Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige wanted him to come to set to meet the rest of the cast for the first time. While it was initially joked that he was joining the cast as Magneto, Adam Driver confirmed that he's actually going to play Nathaniel Milbury, a name that might not be as familiar to some, but has no doubt been generating some major hype for longtime fans of the X-Men, both on the page and small screen. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.Resolute Strategic Ruthless Unyielding ↻ PLAY AGAIN Ultimately, it's pretty exciting that Magneto won't be the film's central protagonist. After years of Magneto being such a dominant force in live-action for literal decades, Marvel Studios now has the runway to do something fresh and dive deeper with other major villains in the X-Men's rogues gallery (and adapt them well). Especially when you consider that the MCU is already bringing Sir Ian McKellen's Magneto into its multiverse story through Avengers: Doomsday and perhaps in Secret Wars as well, there's no pressing need to debut a new Magneto right off the bat with the upcoming reboot. Magneto should absolutely appear in the MCU...eventually. At the end of the day, he's far too important to the X-Men mythos and Charles Xavier to leave out completely, but by no means did he have to be the first major MCU X-Men villain. Likewise, it's a smart move from Marvel Studios overall, as keeping Magneto in the wings for some time will no doubt make his inevitable debut even stronger. Who Is Nathaniel Milbury? Adam Driver's Mister Sinister Explained In the comics, Nathaniel Milbury is one of the aliases associated with Nathaniel Essex, a Victorian-era scientist and dark geneticist who eventually evolves into Mister Sinister. Becoming obsessed with helping humanity reach the peak of its evolution no matter the cost, Sinister eventually starts experimenting on mutants, manipulating their genetics and even granting himself powers and abilities to better accelerate said evolution on a grand scale. Mister Sinister even received power from Apocalypse himself, the First Mutant. During the previous Fox era of X-Men movies, Mister Sinister nearly made his live-action debut years ago. His company, Essex Corp, was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse while his various interests were seeded in movies like Logan and New Mutants, which would have culminated in a full appearance from Sinister himself in the canceled X-Men movie Fear the Beast. Actor Jon Hamm was even in talks to play the villain. Now, it looks as though Mister Sinister will finally become a live-action reality with Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot, and I have no doubt Adam Driver will provide such a compelling performance that Magneto won't even be missed as a central antagonist. Marvel Studios' X-Men is set to release on May 5th, 2028.
