Professor X both mentored them as superheroes, and instructed them as headmaster of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Through this educational element, the mutant-centric corner of the Marvel universe has always been welcome to younger superheroes, whether they’re part of the main X-Men team, or in a separate group like The New Mutants. Now there’s a new teen hero in the mix named Tabby, who was introduced in Uncanny X-Men #35. While her first appearance finds her in an unfortunate predicament, it also looks like she’ll be an important player in this title’s forthcoming story arc. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.Resolute Strategic Ruthless Unyielding ↻ PLAY AGAIN Tabby Is Being Held Captive By The Word Of Strength Uncanny X-Men #35, Written By Gail Simone, Art By Luciano Vecchio Marvel Comics In Uncanny X-Men #34, a hyena-like mutant named Howler escaped captivity from a cult called the Word of Strength, which treated him like an animal and forced him to fight other mutants. Howler managed to make his way to the Haven House in Louisiana, where this book’s X-Men are headquartered. However, Tabby, who looks feline on one side of her body, is still being held captive in the same compound. The archaically-dressed Mr. Gunther, who’s in charge of this branch of the Word of Strength, goes to the room where Tabby is chained up, furious that despite providing food, education, and shelter, he’s nonetheless been “betrayed” by Howler’s escape. Tabby claims she didn’t know Howler was going to do that, and while Gunther says he believes her, he nonetheless beats her with an electrified baton. He does this both because she might know where Howler went because they’re “thick as thieves,” and to burn the “sin” out of her. Though that’s the extent of Tabby’s involvement in Uncanny X-Men #35, this issue isn’t the first time that the Word of Strength has been shown. Wolverine and Ransom crossed paths in Argentina with a different branch in Issues #21 and #22 being run by a man named Proctor (not to be confused with the Dane Whitman from Earth-374) who was able to give the other members powers. However, the anti-mutant X-Men villain team's specific motives remain unclear. Tabby Could Become A New Ally For Wolverine Now that this X-Men team knows about what happened to Howler, they'll soon set out to break up the nearby Word of Strength branch to free Tabby and whoever else might be imprisoned there. Wolverine, in particular, has bonded with Howler since he knows what it’s like to be in a feral state. In fact, it seems like Logan will become especially close with both Howler and Tabby in the coming months. It was shared in the solicitation for Uncanny X-Men #38 that “four damaged mutants [who] have been made into cheap but brutal knockoffs of Wolverine himself” will emerge from the labs beneath the former Graymalkin Prison, where “monstrous experiments” have been conducted. These Wolverine clones will target “a new ally of the Uncanny X-Men,” and while said ally isn’t identified, it’s possible this is Howler. If that’s the case, and assuming that the X-Men successfully rescue Tabby, then perhaps she’ll bond with Wolverine as well and fight alongside him and Howler. What remains to be seen is if these two also have some kind of connection to the Graymalkin labs, like the clones, who, as solicited for Uncanny X-Men #39, want to follow in Wolverine’s footsteps “only AFTER making sure he’s out of the way for good.” So having Howler and Tabby around to watch his back with the other X-Men would be beneficial.
