World-famous homeware brand is ‘lost forever’ as it shuts ALL stores across UK after more than 200 years

A HISTORIC British homeware brand has closed its doors for the final time today – as all remaining sites are shut. This marks an end to the 217-year-old firm’s physical presence in the UK. This included locations in Ashford, Portsmouth, Braintree, York, Dalton Park, Castleford and Cheshire Oaks, which closed this week. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! The closures mark an end to the historic pottery brand’s physical locations, which at its peak operated 24 outlets around Britain. Denby’s fall into administration came as the brand faced “enormous financial challenges” over the last three years, as a result of reduced demand for its products and “escalating” employment costs. Attempts to rescue the business came in the form of the #SaveDenby campaign, with the brand pleading to “save a British institution from being lost forever”. Now, the famous firm is set to “live on” under new ownership. Tony Wright, joint administrator of the Denby group of companies and partner at FRP, said although it was a “sad moment” to see the Pottery Village close, “the Denby brand itself will continue under new ownership, ensuring its legacy lives on”. The new owner is yet to be announced, and FRP have not disclosed what assets have been bought in the deal. All production at its Derbyshire site closed in May this year, leading to the redundancy of more than 120 staff. Comment now
