Will the Europe heatwave bring hot weather to the UK? Latest Met Office forecast for September 2026

BRITS hoping the scorching temperatures seen across parts of Europe will make their way to the UK may be left disappointed. It comes after an exceptionally hot and dry July, which contributed to drought conditions in almost three-quarters of England and all of Wales. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! August was also warmer than average across the UK, and drier than usual in much of the country. A fifth heatwave baked parts of England and Wales in the middle of the month – the hottest day of the year so far was recorded on August 13, with the temperature reaching 38.1C in Kew Gardens. However, a period of more unsettled weather, heavy downpours and thunderstorms arrived later in the month. Will the Europe heatwave bring hot weather to the UK? The latest Met Office forecast shows no sign that the high heat seen in southern Europe will spread to Britain. Cloud and rain is predicted to spread east today. The rain could turn heavy at times, particularly in northern areas, while the southeast is likely to remain dry until the evening. Most read in The Sun Conditions will remain changeable from Friday through Sunday, with further showers or longer spells of rain broken up by sunnier intervals. It is expected to feel a little warmer by Saturday, but nothing in the current forecast suggests temperatures approaching those recently recorded on the continent. How hot is the Europe heatwave? Spain recorded some remarkable temperatures at the beginning of September. Official weather agency AEMET recorded a maximum of 45.7C at El Granado in Huelva on September 3, with 45.1C reached at Sevilla Tablada. France has also experienced an unusually late spell of intense heat. Meteo-France said temperatures in the south had reached levels rarely seen in September, including 40.3C at Lavaur on September 6, and 40.2C at St-Geniez-d’Olt. However, the heat is now easing in France, with temperatures dropping sharply today and many areas returning to around normal for the time of year. What is the Met Office long-range forecast for September? Changeable weather is expected to continue through the middle of the month. Between September 13 and 22, the Met Office forecasts occasional rain or showers arriving from the North Atlantic, particularly across northern and western areas. Strong winds will also be possible at times, although there should be some decent dry and more settled spells, especially in the south. Later in September, high pressure could become more dominant around the UK and bring more widespread settled conditions for a time. Temperatures across the period are expected to be close to average overall, but there is “scope for some rather warm days at times”. From September 23 to October 7, temperatures are forecast to be “a little above average overall”. High pressure could initially maintain more settled conditions before its influence may weaken later in the month and heading into October, increasing the chance of rain, showers and stronger winds. So another taste of summer is possible – but the latest Met Office forecast does not currently signal another UK heatwave. Comment now
