A WIDOW was left stunned after discovering a fortune inside a biscuit tin stashed in her shed. Left by her late husband over 50 years ago, the hidden contents of the tin were found to be worth over £100,000. After spending between £70 and £80 each on the gold Krugerrand back in 1975, the coins were hidden away for 50 years. It was only during a clearout of the couple’s home in Penzance, Cornwall, that the true value of the unassuming biscuit tin was revealed. Having skyrocketed in value since the mid-1970s, the collection of 22-carat South African Krugerrands and British sovereigns was sold at Lay’s Auctioneers in Penzance. In total, the Krugerrands fetched a total of £100,000, and the British sovereigns £13,000 – a staggering £100,000 more than the few thousand pounds spent on them originally. Auctioneer of the coins, David Lay, said: “The lady was thinking of downsizing and I went into her home to look at some items. Another spokesperson for Lay’s added: “You hear about people keeping money under the mattress or under the floorboards because people didn’t trust banks back then but you just don’t expect that to happen now. “The price of gold has is astronomical at the moment so it was an amazing investment by this man. “What a shrewd chap her husband was.” Comment now
