Why There's No New Ghosts Tonight (October 8) & When Season 6 Will Premiere

Published Oct 8, 2026, 3:15 PM EDT Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel. CBS's Ghosts is a big hit for the network, and it's already on to its sixth season; however, don't expect it anytime soon. Ghosts is based on the 2019 British sitcom of the same name, switching the setting to upstate New York. Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay Arondekar (Utkarsh Ambudkar) are a married couple who inherit Woodstone Manor, a gorgeous country house. After a near-death experience, Sam realizes she can see ghosts, and also learns that the manor is inhabited by a striking number of them, all from different periods of American history. The ghosts are anything but malevolent, though, and Sam and Jay continue with their plans to make a bed & breakfast while also helping the spirits move on. It's a witty and charming sitcom series, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 97%. Ghosts takes full advantage of its large ensemble cast and, every season manages to wring out a unique storyline and unique ghosts to keep the story feeling fresh and fun. Season 1 debuted in the fall of 2021, and each subsequent season, save for season 3, also premiered in CBS' fall lineup. So you wouldn't be wrong to expect season 6 to be on the way soon. Unfortunately, that isn't the case, and Ghosts season 6 is still a ways away. The good news is that the showrunners are offering some appetizers that should keep viewers satiated while they wait. Why There's No New Ghosts Episode Tonight (October 8, 2026) Image via MovieStillsDB Ghosts season 6 has been moved to CBS' midseason lineup, which means it won't be premiering in 2026. It's not the first time one of the seasons of Ghosts was released midseason. Season 3 premiered on February 15, 2024, though that was a shortened season due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Season 6 will have the semi-standard 22-episode count. It's not all that unusual for a show to move to a midseason release schedule, particularly one like Ghosts that has been around so long. What CBS and the show are offering, though, are two specials in 2026, both running an hour. There will be a 1-hour Halloween special premiering on October 29, 2026, and a Die Hard-themed Christmas special set to air on December 10, 2026. While these two extra-long episodes won't necessarily push the main plot forward, they are sure to offer some interesting ligature between season 5 and 6. When Ghosts Season 6 Will Release (& What To Expect) Credit: MovieStillsDB Ghosts season 6 doesn't have an official release date at the moment, but the series is expected to come out sometime in the first three months of 2027, along with the other mid-season shows. With 22 episodes planned, it's very likely that the series will run late into the summer of 2027. At the end of season 5, Mayor Tad (Justin Kirk) sells his piece of the mansion to a shady company that would like to bulldoze the home for a data center. The ghosts and Jay and Sam manage to get Woostone designated as a historical landmark at the last moment, but in the commotion, Pete (Richie Moriarty) wanders off the property and disappears. Season 6 will reveal what Pete's ultimate fate is and whether he's gone for good. The data center company probably isn't done with Jay and Sam yet either, and there's still much we don't know about the Others. Ghosts season 6 sounds like it will be worth the wait.
