Many large global airlines rely heavily on the Boeing 777-300ER on primary international routes, which leads to more stable rosters and predictable flying patterns for most crew. Airlines love the aircraft as it can fly long-haul routes without the previous need for four-engine aircraft, therefore saving on operational costs. For crew members, there is another surprising feature. The Boeing 777 is a firm favorite among many crew members for many reasons. The large galleys make it easy to prepare for meal service without bumping into each other. Ask flight attendants what makes the 777-300ER a great aircraft to work on, and the answer usually starts above the ceiling. This guide will look at why they love flying on this flagship aircraft. The All-Important Crew Rest Area Credit: Cathay Pacific The crew rest area or crew rest compartment (CRC), as it is sometimes known, is a crucial area for both pilots and flight attendants. Most widebody long-haul aircraft have two onboard crew rest areas: one at the front near the cockpit for the flight crew and one at the rear for the flight attendants, either above the cabin or in the hold. They are necessary for crew rest during long flights, and passengers would never know they are there. Boeing built the crew rest into the fuselage crown on the Boeing 777-300 rather than the cargo hold, as in some aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and the A340. On the -300ER, eight bunks are arranged in two rows of four, with a small aisle between them, separated by partition walls and heavy-duty curtains that help cut out noise. Each bunk is about six feet, six inches (2 meters) long and two feet, six inches (76 cm) wide, with individual lighting and temperature controls. The bunk has a padded mattress with a seatbelt, so that crew are kept safe during turbulence. There is a reading light, mirror, and a hook for hanging uniform items. A basic pillow and blanket are provided for comfort. Sometimes there is a power outlet or an in-flight monitor screen, depending on the aircraft type and airline. The crew rest area also has safety equipment in case of emergency. These are areas well out of sight of passengers and accessed discreetly. At Cathay Pacific, crew climb a staircase behind a door made to look like a lavatory entrance. At Air New Zealand, entrances are designed to blend into the galley surroundings. Most are nondescript doors with digital locks, completely off-limits to passengers, and may be marked for crew only. Often they are not obvious at all and just resemble a cupboard. The crew rest area is a retreat for flight attendants for a few hours during long-haul flights. With new, improved long-haul aircraft and longer flights, it's become a much-needed space to rest out of public view. Previously, on aircraft such as the Boeing 767, the crew rest area was the last row in the center of economy that was curtained off. This was far from ideal, as you couldn't lie flat and would be disturbed by passengers using the lavatories or by noise from the galley. The new crew rest areas are accessed by a steep, small staircase. Although they are necessary, not all flight attendants like the crew rest area because it is usually very cold and claustrophobic, and turbulence is usually worse at the rear top of the aircraft near the tail, like on the Boeing 747. Some crew affectionately call them 'the coffins'. These areas must remain locked during taxi, takeoff, and landing and cannot be used during those critical times. They also need safety hatches for emergency use, so crew can climb into the cabin. For example, a flight attendant needs a minimum of three hours' bunk rest when the flight duty period exceeds 14 hours. This rises to 4.5 hours when the flight duty period exceeds 18 hours. Crew has to remain alert and ready to deal with an emergency; hence the need for rest during long flights. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires crew rest areas to be where noise, odors, and vibration have minimal effect on sleep. The FAA and international regulators officially classify onboard Crew Rest Facilities into three distinct tiers based on the level of physical separation and comfort they provide. Class one facilities are bunks away from the passenger cabin and have individual bunks/compartments like the crew rest areas. Class two facilities are seats in the cabin which are curtained off for privacy and can be reclined, and class three are standard cabin seats. The two shifts of crew rest are divided equally among the flight attendants. There are always enough crew onboard to cover each shift in case of an emergency. The length of the rest period depends on the flight length. So, for example, on an eight-hour flight from London to Dubai, the crew would have between one and two hours' rest, depending on how busy the service is. On a 14-hour flight from London to Singapore, the crew would have about four to four and a half hours of rest. The second shift wakes before the last meal service. Most crew prefer the second shift, as you are usually more tired by this point, so you can sleep better. The senior crew member (SCCM) decides who goes on which shift based on seniority. Crew rest areas can differ by aircraft type and location. Boeing pioneered using the empty 'loft' space directly above the overhead bins to install crew rest compartments on the Boeing 777 and 787. The Boeing 767, although a widebody, does not have a crew rest area; instead, it has a row of blocked-off seats in economy. The Boeing 747 crew rest area is normally in the aircraft's tail. The Airbus A330 and A340 have crew rest compartments in the cargo hold. The A350 uses the crown space like the Boeing, except the A380, where the compartment is in either the main cabin or the hold. There's informal etiquette about who chooses each bunk; they aren't formally allocated. One Cathay Pacific In-flight Services Manager said that junior crew take the smaller bunks. No noise is allowed in the crew rest area, full stop. No alarms are allowed, but the crew will automatically wake each other. The entire main deck can be used for passenger seating, which could create between $4.9 million and $11.25 million in extra revenue over a 20-year period, according to Collins Aerospace. Placing rest bunks in the fuselage crown above the passenger cabin keeps the main deck and cargo hold clear. In addition, it offers a 66% weight saving compared with lower-lobe crew rest areas like those on the A330 and A340. This reduces operating costs and increases revenue at the same time, so it is another bonus for the airlines. Keeping crew rests in the crown leaves the entire lower deck open for lucrative commercial freight and baggage, a major profit driver on long-haul routes. Over hundreds of long-haul flights per year, those extra seats and cargo pallets translate into millions of dollars in additional revenue per aircraft. Crew rest areas are built for convenience and comfort while using otherwise wasted space, so it is a win-win for airlines. The crew gets the rest and space they need away from passenger demand, and the airlines don't lose any revenue. Major international carriers operating long- and ultra-long-haul routes rely on these factory-certified overhead modules to manage crew fatigue safely and comply with rest regulations. It depends heavily on the aircraft type and the style of the crew rest area; they can be cold and claustrophobic, which isn't conducive to good rest. Some crew rest areas are actually in the cabin and curtained off, which can be uncomfortable for flight crew and flight attendants. Flight crews frequently complain that the Airbus A380 is too quiet, meaning engine noise no longer drowns out passenger chatter, crying babies, galley sounds, and lavatory flushes near the rest bunks. The crew rest area on the Airbus A321XLR has also proved unpopular because the aircraft can fly up to 11 hours, but once again it blocks off seats in the cabin, resembles a small tent, and backs onto lavatories, as seen at Avioradar.net. However, with newer aircraft types that can fly farther than ever before and ultra-long-haul flights becoming the norm, crew rest areas have improved. These include temperature control, monitors, and more comfortable bedding. Suppliers like Diehl Aviation have introduced modular concepts (such as fold-out twin beds or bunks above forward attendant seats) to provide alternative rest spaces without losing whole rows of paying passengers, and may be a future alternative.
