Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time saga has proven extremely difficult to adapt outside the written word, with the Amazon television series being cancelled despite having an absolutely massive budget. Part of the problem was simply the overwhelming scale of Jordan's fantasy world, as the original series spans 14 main novels and a prequel, contains thousands of characters, and develops an intricate history, mythology, magic system, and political landscape that unfolds gradually over millions of words. While the novels had room to spend time inside characters' heads and take their time establishing things, the TV adaptation just didn't have that luxury, and sadly, a lot of the nuance was lost in translation. It's a core reason why a proper WoT live-action adaptation may not be possible, but that doesn't mean ALL adaptations are doomed. Which is good news for fans, as Wheel of Time is getting an incredible new project in 2027 with the release of The One Power. Wheel Of Time Officially Returns After Disappointing Cancellation With Prime Video's The Wheel of Time being cancelled after three seasons, fans may have to look beyond television for adaptations capable of capturing Robert Jordan's enormous fantasy saga. Dire Wolf's War of the Dragon could prove particularly well-suited to the task, however, and is a beacon of hope for the franchise. Billed as Wheel of Time's first official board game adaptation, it is a grand-strategy game primarily built for two players, combining area control, tableau building, and set collection as the forces of the Light and Shadow struggle for control of the Westlands. Its two modes offer different levels of complexity: Hero Mode provides a more accessible introduction, while Epic Mode adds armies, major story objectives, and an eventual confrontation at the Last Battle. That format could actually solve some of the problems that make The Wheel of Time so difficult to adapt in other mediums. Rather than compressing thousands of characters and countless subplots into a limited number of episodes, War of the Dragon can condense Jordan's world down and make it digestible through its unique gameplay mechanics. Characters become allies, political influence translates into control of regions, armies move across the Westlands, and pivotal events can emerge organically as players move through the game. Dire Wolf says the game draws from all 14 main novels, beginning around the events of The Shadow Rising and ultimately building toward Tarmon Gai'don. There is clearly an audience for this novel approach, seeing as the Kickstarter campaign attracted thousands of backers and raised more than $1.16 million. War Of The Dragon: The One Power Arrives In 2027 The One Power was the War of the Dragon Kickstarter's centerpiece pledge at $123, featuring everything from the standard game, but replaces its cardboard character and army standees with 40 PVC miniatures: 30 character figures, eight army figures, and two player pawns, alongside 14 colored miniature bases. The figures are roughly 35mm tall for many characters, giving Rand, Moiraine, and the Forsaken unique designs for longtime WoT fans. The $90 Dragon Reborn tier contains the complete game with its boards, hundreds of cards, tokens, magnetic Wheel spinners, and 38 color standees. Meanwhile, the $289 Last Battle Bundle combines The One Power edition with the Component Upgrade Pack, which adds metal crowns and acrylic tokens, alongside a roughly 36-by-24-inch neoprene playmat, card sleeves, and a campaign-exclusive Map of the Westlands art print. Kickstarter backers also receive three Character Unlock Bundles featuring special versions of Rand, Egwene, and Perrin, including promo cards and alternate standees, plus matching miniatures for One Power owners. The campaign also added the exclusive Narg Rival Card for Solo Mode. Kickstarter lists an estimated June 2027 delivery, and Dire Wolf more broadly expects U.S. fulfillment during the first half of 2027, with international deliveries following and all backers ideally receiving their games by the end of 2027. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is expected to get a wider retail release in 2027 as well, so if you missed your chance to pledge to the Kickstarter campaign, you're not completely out of luck.
