WestJet is restructuring its international network with a dramatic reduction in overseas destinations. The Calgary-based air carrier is slashing 15 routes due to a combination of soft transborder traffic and volatile fuel prices since the conflict in Iran began earlier this year. The cutback has eliminated or suspended numerous routes across Europe, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Among the high-profile casualties are seasonal transatlantic corridors operated by the carrier’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet to popular European destinations. Similarly, the seasonal route connecting Toronto to Glasgow, which had just returned after a multi-year hiatus, is also being permanently cut. That leaves only Edinburgh standing as a connection to Scotland. In Latin America, demand fell short of commercial viability. Thus, service to San Andrés Island in Colombia out of Montreal was entirely dropped. Over in the Hawaiian leisure market, WestJet quietly wound down its point-to-point transborder operation to Lihue from Vancouver. Looking at its domestic operations, Alberta connections out of Calgary to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge were also completely eliminated. The most drastic withdrawal, however, is the airline’s complete exit from Cuba. It has pulled the plug on scheduled services to Cayo Coco, Cienfuegos, Cayo Largo del Sur, Havana, Holguín, Santa Clara, and Varadero. Driven by systemic fuel shortages, nationwide electrical blackouts, and shifting travel patterns, WestJet completely dismantled its flights to the Caribbean island nation. The situation has resulted in the complete cancellation of all flights to all seven previous destinations within Cuba. Skyrocketing Fuel Prices Are Playing A Key Role Credit: Ritu Manoj Jethani | Shutterstock WestJet's difficulties largely stem from the skyrocketing jet fuel prices that have squeezed the aviation industry across the globe. This financial pressure stems directly from massive global energy disruptions caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine and, more severely, the outcropping of Operation Epic Fury. For airlines like WestJet, these compounding geopolitical crises effectively destroyed the profitability of long-haul, lower-yield leisure routes. The joint US and Israeli attack on Iran has led to extreme volatility in oil barrel prices due to attacks on production facilities in the region as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, where many global oil exports originate. As the war expanded to drag in regional neighbors and disrupt civilian infrastructure, global oil benchmarks spiked violently. Indeed, West Texas Intermediate hit six-month highs over $103 a barrel and Brent crude settled near $117 a barrel. The situation has caused a contraction of commercial aviation around the world, but for WestJet it has been made worse by a simultaneous, dramatic drop in transborder travel from Canadians to the US. No Flights To The US: Canadians Choose To Stay Home Credit: Aviation Photo Crew | Shutterstock The imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and an active trade conflict have severely strained bilateral relations between the two Nations that have historically been the closest allies in the world. Analyses from aviation experts, tourism boards, and government statistics agencies directly attribute the severe decline in transborder travel to the political tensions, tariff disputes, and Trump's aggressive rhetoric. Data from Statistics Canada confirms that overall transborder air travel fell by 19%, while vehicle border crossings plummeted by 31% compared to 2024 levels. Forward flight bookings for peak travel seasons collapsed by over 70%. This severe, policy-driven drop in passenger demand is what eliminated the profitability of these corridors, forcing WestJet, Air Canada, and Air Transat to pull hundreds of thousands of seats out of the US market. Repeated public statements and threats regarding Canada's sovereignty, such as references at political rallies to making Canada the '51st state,' have deeply alienated the Canadian public. This hostile political climate has accelerated a visible consumer boycott of American destinations. By concentrating its jets on core domestic routes, the airline is defending its dominant position in Western Canada. To salvage its bottom line, WestJet executed a dramatic strategic pivot, cutting dozens of its less profitable international and secondary transborder options. The airline has had no choice but to reallocate aircraft capacity back into the domestic Network and only the most popular US routes where demand remained robust enough to absorb the increased operational costs.
