We beat GTA 6: OpenClaw launches version 2.0, calls it biggest update since launch

OpenClaw has just received its biggest update yet, called OpenClaw 2.0. This release brings faster setup for users, simpler workflows and more. This platform was behind the AI agents on the viral AI-only social media platform Moltbook where bots called for an AI uprising. Now, OpenClaw is bringing, what it calls, the biggest update to the project’s history.On X, the project announced the update called OpenClaw 2.0. OpenClaw took a dig at GTA 6 that is scheduled to release in November this year, writing, "HA! We beat GTA6!" OpenClaw added that the focus of this update was to make things easier and simpler for you. This includes faster setups and a rebuilt browser app, among other changes. OpenClaw made a reference to GTA 6 with the new release. OpenClaw says this release was built by 933 contributors, including 569 first-time contributors, and includes more than 16,000 pull requests – the largest ever for the project. It also took nearly seven weeks to release, compared to the usual one or two-day patches. The project previously released 106 updates in just 230 days.Easier setup and browser-first useOne of the biggest changes for users with OpenClaw 2.0 was simpler installation. For first-time installs, OpenClaw now starts with what is already on a user’s computer, including existing ChatGPT, Claude or Codex logins, API keys and local models such as Ollama or LM Studio. It moves much of the configuration out of the initial setup so you can get to a first conversation more quickly and finish configuring the assistant by speaking to it like a chatbot. New installs on Mac, Linux and Windows are aimed at a faster first conversation, while mobile onboarding on iOS and Android now starts with pairing and permissions.The browser app, which the company said is where most users first interact with OpenClaw, has been rebuilt. It now opens directly into a conversation with the user’s Claw (AI agent) and is designed for setup and ongoing work. The new interface is centred on conversations, with chat, files, approvals and settings placed closer together. It also adds pinned chats, grouped sessions, search, live Markdown streaming and a side-conversation command, /btw, for tangential questions.Workflows and shared sessionsOpenClaw says a Claw can begin with a simple workflow, such as watching an inbox for children’s school emails and sending a Telegram message when something important appears, including homework or upcoming activities.The team says that the workflows can then expand across apps without becoming harder to use. In one example, a user can tell the Claw that their brother had sent an iMessage asking which iPad they bought for their father, and the Claw can find the answer from an email receipt and send it back.OpenClaw added that the same progression led to shared cloud sessions. Earlier, a Claw’s context could not be handed over to another person without losing what it already knew. With shared sessions, team members can now join live work, collaborate or take over tasks with context intact.Everything else about OpenClaw 2,0The release notes include an important migration change – session and transcript storage has moved from individual files to SQLite format. Users who may want to downgrade later are advised to back up and restore legacy transcript data first, because sessions created after migration will not appear on older versions.Migrations from Claude, Codex or Hermes now run in a staging area with verification before the new setup replaces the old one. Settings have been reorganised into a full-page workspace, while conversations now support identity, permissions, presence indicators, and an optional incognito mode.Do note that OpenClaw’s creator Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI in February this year.
